Now he has razor burn back there. It's driving him crazy. He's dragging his butt along the carpet, spinning in circles trying to get back there, chewing on himself as close as he can get to that area, and pulling the fur out in that area (there's no fur on the back of his tail now). Now, the area is all red. It looks painful & itchy to me. Is there anything I can do to help soothe this razor burn? I called the e-vet. They want me to bring him in. I'm thinking, $94 for razor burn is not worth it. What do you all think? |

Until you can get into the vet, I'd put some cortisone creme on the area and/or sprinkle it with Gold Bond medicated powder. When I use the cortisone creme I also use an Elizabethan collar. But that's just me. I don't want to take any chances on my dogs ingesting something that might make them sick. With the Gold Bond powder, I have found they don't get sick if they lick it. First off it seems to soothe the irritation & 2nd it tastes bad so they generally steer clear of licking it. If he's been scooting around & irritated it further, he may be getting an infection in the area which might require an antibiotic. Vet may give you some prednisone to help stop the itching cycle. |
Is it worht going to the ER for razor burn? Can't anser that for you. Raxor burn can be VERY painful. Then you have to hope it doesnt' get infected. Do you have a soft e collar? Some creme back there, maybe an antiinflamtory ( not human aspirin) and keeping him from licking it with an e collar will help. But I would take him to the regular Vet to make sure its not infected and possibly they can prescrib something form him for comfort.
If its raw and red, he may not want to poop as that causes some discomfort and that can develop into a problem. |
The burn can become infected and will be very painful. I took Patch in for an infection on her paw from her knawing on it; the vet gave her a shot for the itch and antibiotics for the infection - it cleared up the itch immediately and killed the infection. I woujld suggest taking him to the vet to ease his miserable itch. |
Phone your groomer as well and let them know about the razor burn. There's no excuse for that . I would be very upset and want an explanation . I agree you could put a cone on your dog and apply a medicated powder or cream ASAP. |
Poor Brick!!!!! I agree with the other posters, ANd I would contact the groomer so she is aware of it! |
Just talked to my regular vet.
Said to put hydrocortizone creme on the area. Could also give Benadryl tablets for itchiness. She said to see how that goes for a few days. If it doesn't improve, then I'll bring him in. |
Brick has been SO uncomfortable the last couple of days.
I brought him to the vet today. She expressed his glands (he's never had that done before and was not at all happy about it) and then gave him a steroid shot. He seems to be resting comfortably now, which is good. She said that he should be much better in a few days and there was really nothing else I should except keeping the area clean. If it still bothers him tomorrow, I'll need to call them back. |
Poor boy, hope he's feeling better real soon. |
Poor Brick, I hope it all settles down for him.
What did the groomer say? |
Here's the thing with the groomer.
I haven't told her and probably won't. Why, you ask? 1) Well, she is the first groomer that ever seemed to make a connection with Brick. He can be very difficult when brushing his front legs or cutting his front nails. Most groomers tell me that he has bad manners and that I should train him better or get help with him in this regard. They make it pretty clear that they don't want to work on him. For some reason, she bonded with him and he doesn't mind terribly when she's working on him. When I bring him in she seems to love him and he runs to her. He's almost 6 years old and I've never seen him take a liking to a groomer the way he has to her. 2) He had a bit of dried poop on that area and she probably felt she was doing me a favor by clipping it out. In all reality, I should've had that cleaned before I brought him, but I didn't. I kinda feel like I was the cause of all this. So really, what can I say? |
mark, my groomer did this for me often enough and also used a shampoo w/skin conditioner all the time which helped quite a bit. |

I wouldn't say anything in that case. If you bring him in poo tag free and it happens again, then you may want to, as it just may be something that Brick can't tolerate, with no reflection on the groomer. |
