Is my DVD player broken?

First my boob, now my DVD player? It's a combo VCR/DVD player. Tapes work fine. But every DVD I put in doesn't load and I get the message "bad disc." I've unplugged it, turned it off, turned it on, wiped down the discs. Every disc I own cannot be bad, so I guess it's the player?

Any other "try to make it work" suggestions before I pitchthis (preferably through the window) and get a new one???

I got that message when I was trying to play a DVD with a computer format.

So if its a problem that just started and you've been able to play the DVD's before now, then I guess (I'm not that good at technology) that either the settings have been changed so it is trying to read a different format or the laser thingy that reads the DVD's is broken.

Hope someone who is more tech savvy can give you better advice.
It won't be me giving the techi advice, but I'm sorry you can't watch your movies!
How old is it? I didn't even know they still made a combo unit! You could try unplugging it and blasting the heck out of it with compressed air in case it's dirty in there. It's probably a tosser though. The price that you'd pay to even have it looked at would easily buy you a new DVD player.
I vote it's the laser thingy. It's probably time to throw it out the window.
It's probably either the laser or if it has the laser on a motor or belt driven unit that could be failing. It's easier to look at if it's not a drawer unit but given that it's a combo unit you are probably stuck.
You can try what Jill said and use the compressed air. If that doesn't work, you can try a last ditch effort to clean the laser with a wet CD cleaner. (That's the one where you put a drop of liquid on a brush connected to a disc.) It is not recommended unless you have started playing Taps for the unit.
I'm going to try the cleaner. I figure it can't hurt!

So what do stuck-in-the-past people like me do with our VHS tapes that we still watch? Do I need to get a separate video player? Are video players still made????
You need to buy them on DVD!
If it's stuff that you can't buy anywhere, like home movies, then you need to convert them to digital. Old tape, whether they are vhs tapes or cassettes, are just iron particles on acetate. Either the iron will fall off or if you don't watch the tapes regularly, you will get bleed through where some of the "info" bleeds through the tape onto another part of the video. It's a really unstable media.
I love it when my college education actually has a real world application!!
I would get a new DVD player, BluRay is the "in" thing now and keep the old one to view your VCR Tapes. Get one that will also play MP3 format music while you are at it. you may also want to get one with an Ipod Dock if you have an Ipod. One little Ipod can store literally thousands of songs and/or other files. During the next few months you can find a source to copy the tapes onto a DVD or just buy new DVD's of your favorite tapes.
