I am presently reading the following: "Living with Kids and Dogs...Without Losing Your Mind A Parents Guide to Controlling the Chaos." by Colleen Pelar, CPDT I am finding this helpful really does bridge the gap of "watch the kids/watch the dogs". Great ideas on how to train your kids and dog. The other I haven't open yet, "My Smart Puppy" by Brian Kilcommons and Sarah Wilson I have two more books by Ian Dunbar on order from the library to read. What books did you find helpful with training and raising your dog? Easy to read, well written or too technical. Good points but a lot left out. Glad you spent the money on or wished you didn't. Thanks for your input. |

I found the book." Raising a Puppy you can Live with" most helpful. I foregt the author but if you google it, it will come up. The author mihgt be Rutherford... |
I highly recommend Patricia McConnell, PhD, in particular 'The Other End of the Leash' and 'For the Love of a Dog'. Her insight into canine behavior is extraordinary, and her narrative style is funny, easy to read and digest. I'm currently on my third read of each of these, and the amount of information she packs into each book is amazing. Good luck! |
Okay I have read, "Living with Kids and Dogs..." It is worth reading if you have kids and don't have a dog yet to help decide if you should get one. Or if you have kids and dogs and just would like a fresh take on some ideas to do with the kids and dogs.
The book starts with should you get a dog on to different development stages of children and how that stage relates to dogs. As a parent with children in two different stages I found this helpful. It suggests things to do to help bonding between dogs and children. Also has a summary at the end of each chapter if you are too tired to read the entire chapter you can just read the summary. Most chapters are short and easy to read. 148 pages long. On of the other books I had on order is, "Care and Grooming of Old English Sheepdogs", by Monique Carriere. ISBN: 0-9693044-1-2 This is the first "Old English Sheepdog" book that has been breed specific from beginning to end. Others I have found give the history of OES then go into a generic dog stuff. I think it is well written, informative on more then just grooming. Worth trying to purchase (or at least for me). This is a Canadian book so it may be hard to find, I haven't look yet for it. I may just have to keep taking it out of the library. I hope this is helpful to someone. |
