Welcome to the board.
We always only give our dogs 1/2" or so of water at a time followed by a microfiber cloth hung nearby to wipe (more like scrub the hell out of) their mouths. We always have people comment on how nice our dogs beards are ...there's a little staining, but most of the time... they're "white enough." There are also whitening shampoos but after using them for years and them working VERY WELL... I noticed I just didn't need them if they were bathed regularly. My dogs are always white. When I had a maltese, I'd use it every 5th bath or so... just for the extra sparkle. My dogs are real fluffy when properly line brushed. You can google on here on how to do that. However, my backyard breeder dog.. will be fluffy for just a few minutes no matter what I do ..including teasing the hair, so a lot of it has to do with the type of coat. My dog from a good line stays fluffy ALL the time, and I do nothing. As for brushing... I'll let others give you tips, but I'm just going to be frank and say not all dogs will ever really enjoy it. My maltese sounds like your small dogs. I brushed her regularly, gave her treats, made sessions short, can honestly say I started from day 1, and pet her a lot during... and she always looked like she was in an electric chair while I brushed her. With the same things done with my OES, she tolerates it. The second OES absolutely lovvvvvvvvvves it, but that's just because he gets jealous I'm doing it to dog 1. He gets soooo distraught at the idea of me spending time with dog 1, that he jumps OVER the gate to be brushed. Go figure. Hope you stay and post stories and pics of your new pup. We're glad to have you here |
First of all, you want to buy from a reputable breeder. A reputable breeder will, among other important things, start training those puppies for the grooming table at a very young age. Our puppies are put onto the grooming table as soon as their eyes open. So from about 2 weeks onward they are exposed to brushing, how to behave on the grooming table & bathing. |
Start with 5-10 minutes a day from day one, then gradually increase. Be gentle, but firm, and provide treats. There are lots of posts on here regarding beards & bathing, have a good read through & you will pick up lots of hints & tips |

I agree!!!!!...when Heart came to me, grooming was NOT a problem at all!! The breeder made sure that all the puppies were very accustomed to being handled and brushed and blow dried in addition, no problems with checking teeth, ears, eyes and tusch. good luck ~~~~ |
