my oes is petrified of new oes puppy

Can any body out there lend some help.

I have a beautiful sweet 3 year old male oes named buddi. I decided to double my fun and joy so I thought. The problem is my new 9 weeks old male oes is not being accepted by my Buddi. Buddi is a big mush and a big 110lb baby, who is petrified of the puppy. He hides and won't go near him, he stays in the basement and will only come up with much much prompting. It is breaking my heart to see this dog who is our angel so depressed and act like this. If the puppy goes to close to him he runs away and if the puppy chases him Buddi will go after him, so much so that the puppy has to play dead for Buddi to retreaet. I don't think that this new member is going to work out for us, especially since it is causing so much stress for Buddi. The problem is the puppy is adorable, and he comes from the same breeder that my Buddi came from I hate to part with him, but I don't want to hold onto the puppy for to long for fear of getting too attached to the wonderful puppy and for fear of Buddi's reaction. The other problem is if I send the puppy back to the breeder I face a heat embargo on the flight & may not be able to get the puppy back to soon for another person to purchase.

Help any suggestions.

Dawn, have things improved yet?Years ago,we had a female OES about 3 years old and got a new OES pup,I was petrified the big one would eat or hurt the pup.I kept the pup in our en suite bathroom at night to be near us,and she cried for hours, night after night. Finally,we couldnt take it any more and my husband took her out and put her in the kennel with the big OES who was curious about her but never tried to play, mainly ignored her ,by day.I was so scared all night, thinking the pup is probably dead, well, when we got up the 2 had bonded and big dog had adopted the pup as her own and that was it,they were joined at the hip for their entire lives, always together, fretted if we took one to the vet etc and not the other, luckilly when they got old, they both crossed the same month so neither had to endure years without its "other half".Maybe putting them both in a room together one night will cure the problem?Mine were both females,I dont know if that made a difference, big dog had never had a litter.I hope your two are settled and in love by now,2 sheepies are so much fun.Good luck,Kynzi
Hi

Things did not get bettrer, my big guy refused to eat or come up the stairs. He barely tolerated the puppy. I don't think that he would have hurt the puppy but I was not sure how the puppy would react ince he got bigger. I took them both to the vet and she had suggested that because Buddi was such a sensitive dog not to wait to long before deciding if this would be a permanent arrangement.
Well after much agonizing I decided that I could not put buddi through such chaos, and it wasn't fair to have the puppy in an enviorment where buddi was not receptive to this new family member. i don't know if it made a difference that they were both males, I think it was just that Buddi was so used to having all the attention all the time.

I was lucky enough to find a a great new home for the puppy, which the breeder also screened, and I have been fortunate to hear from them via e mail at least twice a week on the progress the puppy is making. It did break my heart to part with him, I cried for a week. The truth is if I kept him any longer i surely would not have been able to give him up and that would have changed my big boys personality always.

I feel I made the right choice, but do regret that Buddi would not do well with another dog in the house. Next time around when I'm read for a another puppy I will get two oes's from the same litter and different sexes.

Thank you for your concern
