Hi Cassie we used a Halti years ago for our last oes. Trouble is if they have long hair on their faces it seems to get in the way. Which one did the trainer say is best for Ru? |
You can let either off leash just as fast as a collar. You just keep it on [as you would a collar] and unhook where you attached it.
I don't know what a canac gentle leader is, but "in general" ...I've always preferred the gl over the halti. Just the fit. It did take having someone at the store to show me how to properly adjust it to get one to fit properly though!! |
i use a canny collar for billy, i was recomended it by the rspca.
i tried all the halti's head and body harnesses and didnt like them. http://www.cannyco.co.uk/ this works for us! |
I'm already using the Canny Collar, but it just pulls the snout downwards, I think he looks up (straight ahead or at whatever he's pulling towards) so it doesn't really work, although it's better than a normal collar. The trainer put a Gentle Leader on Ru while we were walking & it made a big difference as it pulls the head to face your leg so he can't see where he's going if he pulls. I'm just wondering if the Halti is better |
Cassie, did they talk to you about teaching him NOT to pull?
Management may be sufficient for some, but you intend to show the boy, which means you're going to have to wean him off to a real collar anyway. Even if you could use a halter thingie of some sort, his gait would look a little funky with his head plastered to your leg And don't even think about telling his breeder you're planning on putting one of those contraptions on his head - or head coat At least not without some smelling salts handy. Yes Me! too I also use the canny collar! for maizie i have tried all the others too. I like the canny collar. and it works with maizie |
We were using the Gentle Leader harness... It worked really well, the only problem was that it made her hair mat up really bad where the harness was. |

Kristine That was my first thought, too. They definitely rub so he's going to lose some face hair. With neck collars, losing hair isn't such a big deal since you typically strip some of that area anyway. Head coat isn't as plentiful! Do you have other training collar choices that the trainer also prefers working with? I can't remember if you mentioned it: have you tried a prong collar already for training? |
I think it is a training plan that they all develop in the puppy clases that they attend with out us. You know the "How to train your humans". |
I was hoping to use it on walks, although he doesn't pull walking in the street unless we stop near another dog. My problem is, I don't think I can control him with all the other dogs around at training. I just got an email from the trainer saying he has a gentle leader I can try out at the session.
For me, it's more about getting & keeping his attention and getting him to focus on what I'm saying. Right now, he just won't listen because he's too busy pulling towards the other dogs & me giving a pull on the lead makes no difference because he just continues to look & pull me at them. I guess that's something they will work on at training anyway. |
i could never walk my 2 without a gentle leader |
I use the Gentle Leader with Seb. He has been on it since he was about 10 weeks old or so. I started him early so he would get used to it. I could tell right from the start that it was critical that I have little more control over him. He loves to pull and gets overly excited when seeing any dog. The Gentle leader really works, but you have to have it fitted properly. |
