More of a storm..

than we planned on. 8O
The weather turned into a blizzard warning and they closed area schools.
Now they closed all state highways in 11 counties this afternoon, as well as most interstates. Pulled all plows at dark.
Here is a link to our local station. After a very short intro, there is some good video footage.

I am in Blue Earth county, just 10 miles east of Mankato - for reference.

Area schools are all posted as 2 hours late for tomorrow already. They plowed our road once before noon, nothing after.

Dawn,
How mucrh snow does your city/town get per year?
Dawn: PLEASE keep it up your way  My dog run just today melted down to the gravel. It is snowing but just lightly here. First time we've seen the ground since 2 days after Christmas! 8O
Mark - I had to look that one up! The answer is an average of 41 inches of snow.

But more odd is we just had a thaw over the weekend and had a full day of pouring rain on Saturday. Totally NOT the usual MN weather. All that rain came on top of the large amt of snow we had already. It then froze on Sunday - so it was like a huge skating rink as soon as you stepped out the door.

Then we had a forecast of 1-2 inches of snow for today. This storm was totally unpredicted! 8O 8O

Odd, odd weather.... so I hope it doesn't spread east, Marilyn :?
yes, PLEASE keep the cold UP NORTH where it belongs!!!
Was a glorious 83 here today with nary a cloud in the sky!!!

Tonight it is down to 40's............ dogs are loving it.
What do you wear on your feet? Do you wear crampons? I've seen some you can loop over your shoes for normal walking or jogging.

Keep warm & safe!!
Wow Dawn,. I hope you don't have to go out anywhere. You are definatly getting "the weather." and it is only January Hopefully MN will get a "breather" soon.

Stay safe!
Oh, YUK!!!

Just some light snow here, but we had the rain and then freeze so herding is in danger of being called since neither dogs nor sheep are good on iceskates :(

Still, at least no blizzard. Stay warm and safe.

Kristine

That's what I'd be doing!!! It was 80 here a few days ago, and I HAAAAAATTTTTTED it.
Cassie - yes, many people wear the cleated footwear. Especially those who work outside. I don't have them, however I have some super Mukluks that are the best for keeping feet warm!! ( http://www.mukluks.com/ )

We really didn't get that much snow - 2-4 inches maybe? - hard to tell as it blew everywhere and it was on ice - so little stuck except where there are drifts.

I see they updated the video this morning too - the interview with the man wasn't on there last night.

The highways are starting to open. The 4 lane just got posted as open, most of the 2 lanes are still closed.

That's what we did. I had the day off anyway after working all weekend. I stayed home, cancelled my training classes (of course!)
LeAnne left her fieldwork (school) site in time to still get home. Keith wasn't able to go in to work last evening as the roads were already closed.

I read a book, watched TV with Todd in front of the corn stove. I was going to brush Chewie, but with it being a normal night out for class, I decided not to - as I always brush him out before we go.
LeAnne and Keith played WOW  LeAnne made some yummy brown sugar cookies too!
just showed the news to DH, born Minnesota, he chuckled and said, "Look at those blond/blue eyed people, must be Minnesota."

Nothing about the weather, he was just impressed with the people's hair and eye color...........sshheeeesshh.

Hope your weather clears quickly.

LOL - and this brown eyed, brown haired NATIVE Minnesotan takes exception to that!
Dawn, I'm further east than you, sitting on the Mississippi River, down in the river valley. That has protected us from the white out conditions. We got, as best as I can tell, a slight dusting of snow. A welcome relief after driving back and forth to work last week in freezing rain. A friend turned around once he got to the top of the bluffs because of white out, but down here: not much at all.

It can be very deceptive since we're located in a river valley and so protected from the very worst of the wind and snow. Lots of times as I head to work in Rochester, I am shocked by what I see when I get to the top of the ridge. I try to make sure I check out the road conditions before I leave, just so I can be prepared.

The wind out on the plains where you are is really something. It's not calm here, but where you are: Wow.
41 inches a year is not a lot of snow. I'm surprised that they close the roads. Is it the blowing snow or is it due to lack of snow removal equipment?

Here in Syracuse, our average is about 120 inches of snow per year. Sometimes we get more, rarely less. The winter of 1992-1993 we got 193" of snow. And the more rural areas about 30-40 minutes north of the city can get up to 400 inches per year. 8O Yes, you read that right. Lake effect snow, baby!!
Heck we've already had about 60 inches so far this season.

I can't remember the last time a road was closed around here due to snow. We have the best road crews in the country (or so they say). And we dump a lot of salt. The county will go thru about 600,000 tons of rock salt per winter. And that's just Onondaga county.
^^^^^^
I swear it snows in July on the Thruway when you go past Syracuse
Having driven home from a dog show in Syracuse in a blizzard in November 2008, I can vouch for their weather. Thank goodness there were tail lights ahead to me to follow. Of course if they'd have driven off the side of a cliff I'd have been right there with them

It was totally the blowing snow. It makes huge drifts and the visibility was about zero in most areas. This storm only gave us about 2-4 inches of snow. The wind on the open prairie is something to witness. It makes a normal day go to impassable in a short time.

LOL - we have awesome snow removal too. The problem is, once again, the wind. The plows go by, but in 15-20 minutes you can't tell they have gone by. In fact it makes it worse, because the edge of snow from the plow now makes something for the wind to trap snow on, and it fills in even deeeper, and so on, quite the viscious circle.

And, we have intense cold, so salt is not an option for most storms. It won't work with our average winter temps. And if it does, then the blowing snow catches on the slushy stuff and makes it worse.
Well, having lived in Syracuse AND the upper midwest, though I don't like driving in snow PERIOD, in some ways central NY was less scary than here. The blowing snow is horrendous. The ice. We may not get as much snow but it gets as much bang for its buck as it possibly can 8O

I do think the snow removal people/equipment are top notch in the general Syracuse area. Of course, they get a lot of practice.

And, Kerry, I do believe it does snow on occasion in July. Well certainly June.
