Update on Rudy...what a week!

Well, the paperwork is done and the service assures me it's all good. We have a flight booked for Monday and he'll be in Minneapolis for us to pick up.

Of course, now we have a winter storm watch so my hubby's heading down early. (I'm booting him out at the crack of down tomorrow so he'll beat the worst of it.) He has been told not to come home without that beautiful boy.

I'm still trying not to get excited. I can think of a hundred things that can go horribly wrong between now and Monday, and I need to assume the worst as a sort of cosmic insurance policy. But my fingers are tightly crossed.

There have been two OMG...we can't have him moments this week, but things still seem to be somewhat on track, so we may just pull this off. The amazing rescue lady keeps pointing out to me that she shipped a dog to Panama which was easier than the airlines are making this trip to Minnesota. Go figure!

Did I ever share a picture of (our hopefully soon to be) Rudy? Here's a link. I may be pretty biased, but I think that's one very handsome face.

Any extra fingers out there that are willing to cross for us would be most welcomed and greatly appreciated...

I hope the link works.

Our little Ripple flew from North Carolina
to Nebraska without a hitch!
(well, maybe a few but, that happens)
I am VERY impressed with the way American Airlines
handled everything.
They had a delay in Dallas...little Ripple had an accident in
his crate.
They went up to get his new Daddy to walk him while they cleaned
out his crate! 8)

I hope Rudy has a safe, safe flight!
He is coming from an awesome foster home....
Good Luck!
Hope it works out! :)
good luck on the flight!!!

What airlines and time is he coming in to MPLS on?
That's about 1.5 hrs from my house!

How long of a drive for you to MPLS? Hope it goes well. It is pouring rain ( 8O :!: 8O what kind of weird weather!) and 35 F right now, then will freeze by tonight, thaw again Sunday then back to normal cold weather by Sunday evening. It is going to be one huge mess

Rudy is quite the cutie :D
Oh is he cute!!! Fingers and toes crossed that everything goes without a hitch. It will, I just know it will.
:crossed: Hope all goes well. Rudy looks adorable. He is going to bring alot of smiles and laughter into your home. :D
He's adorable. Reminds me a lot of Zeke.
I'm sure everything will work out just fine.
My husband left Winnipeg at six am today. In good weather it's about 7 and a half hours. I just got a text from him. He's made it to Fargo already, so he's about halfway there. It's snowing a lot here, and right around zero, so it'll be worse later on this evening when it freezes.

He was supposed to leave tomorrow, to meet the plane Monday, but I kinda bullied him into going at the crack of dawn today (called him at work and let him know I'd already booked the hotel, etc.) The hope was that he'd get out of here before the bulk of the storm.

If he gets snowed in in Minneapolis then he and Rudy can bond for a few days in the hotel. Not ideal, but I'll know they are both safe and sound. If he waited any longer to leave here we could potentially have had Rudy arriving and no one to meet him. I couldn't imagine what we'd do if that happened.

So, hubby will spend the weekend in a hotel right by the airport, so he's nearby for the Monday afternoon arrival. I, of course, am still convinced something will keep Rudy from getting on the plane, but I need to worry. Things only seem to go horribly wrong when I don't, so it's my own cosmic insurance policy.

Hudson has been staring out the window and crying for his daddy for the last five hours. He is SO his dad's dog!

Here's hoping things continue to go well.
Be sure and get a letter of acclimation fro your vet.
Cold temps may be the only hold up!
LOL - I just made that drive last weekend coming back from ND - going through Fargo and then through to Mpls/St Paul. Looks like he will be in snow through St Cloud, but then into the rain side of the storm.

I agree - it was a good idea to leave this morning, I am afraid it is going to get much worse for driving after today.
My friends in ND say they are getting tons of wet heavy snow.
He looks brilliant. Hope everything goes to plan and you are all back together as a big happy family xxx
By the tone of your posts you do not sound excited at all - making all kinds of arrangements via long distance, driving through heavy snowfall and storms, staying in a hotel to be able to greet him after a long trip, all to make a happy and loving home for Rudy. Thank god for the rescues who find a needy dog a good and caring home. Please keep us updated. What about Hudson, is he ready for a new brother?
Have you checked the weather for the time his flight is coming in?
If it is too cold they will not let him fly...
If he leaves Florida and gets to his first stop and the
second one is below the vets reccomendations they will hold
him there.
Not to worry you just so you can be prepared....
Rudy is adorable! I love happy rescue stories. Hope hubby and Rudy arrive home safe and sound.
You're right he has a VERY cute face!

:crossed: That the weather doesnt cause too many problems. I'm a member of the "worry a lot" insurance group too. :D
It's a direct flight. If something happens and he can't get on the plane he'll at least be with the rescue person, so I know he'll be safe.

The service we hired assures me all contingencies have been anticipated and overcome. I, however, still need to worry. It's my thing.

I know that, no matter what, he'll be safe. If (heaven forbid) something goes wrong and he can't get on the plane, he'll still be in good hands. I just really need nothing to go horribly wrong. We've all been through plenty.
Thats really good news.....direct flights are always the best...
Yep, he is in good hands.
I believe I have heard him "speak"
when I was on the phone with her one day!!
Congrats!! he sure is a cutie. Positive thoughts being sent your way.
:crossed: :crossed: :crossed: :crossed: :crossed:
What a sweet sweet face! :hearts: :hearts: :crossed: :crossed: that all goes well!
he is such a lucky fla boy to see snow!! i know candy and all her rescues she puts alot of time and love into them i am sure he will fit right in today in fla it will be in the 80's what till he gets off the plane burrrrrrrr
hope all goes well. keep us posted. my florida sheepies are jealous! they want to play in snow!
Keeping my fingers crossed for a safe journey home to your arms!
When does Rudy's flight touch down????
We are snowing and windy here - I hope Rudy makes it in as scheduled!!!

I just looked - no wonder it seems windy....we are in a blizzard warning and wind advisory until midnight 8O
oh no! when is he due to land?
I feel like I am reading an adventure novel with this post....Did Rudy touch down yet? Did he get delayed? Is hubby safe and sound in the hotel???
FAA says Minneapolis is good (as of 5:43 PM EST, 1/25/09).

http://www.fly.faa.gov/flyfaa/ncmap.jsp
Tracie,

Good thing you had to work at school today at least with the kids you would have been distracted and not totally thinking/worrying about you new pup.

That is unless you like some of my family in Manitoba with a snow day.

Then I feel for you... what a long day. We are all excited for you guys.

Only the best wishes for you too.
Is he there yet, is he there yet??!! :yay:
Nope. Flight never left Florida.

Trying again tomorrow.

Sob,

But he is safe and sound and back with Candy at the rescue.

One of the guys at Delta called me when his flight was cancelled, and said he is, quote, "one awesome dog." He also said he was really sweet.
Sorry, I was worried about that...
He is worth the wait!
Ah, so sorry to hear that he didn't get to fly out today. :( :(

I hope they get him rescheduled real soon and he gets home to you ASAP! :D :D
Okay, I have to let this out.

Please, scroll on by. I know it's going to go on forever.

I just need to vent.

First of all....I cannot thank Candy at the rescue enough. She is truly an angel. No word of exaggeration there.

So, first, last week I started having inexplicable dizziness/nausea at night. Went to the doctor - vertigo. OMG. I had no idea how horrible that was until I experienced it, and if you haven't and you think you know...well you just don't. I sure didn't. Now I know and I wish I didn't.

The doctor says probably meniere's disease. Could be minor, could be severe, could go away and never return, could be chronic. Okay, I'll try to deal. Got home and about a dozen things went wrong with transporting Rudy. Didn't even get to take my first pill until nearly bedtime. (None of this is/was in any way the fault of the rescue. I will say it again, Candy has been amazing.)

Got all of that squared away. Wanted to stay home in bed, but I'm TIC (teacher in charge/acting principal) when my admin is away and he needed me in the next day, so I went. In a dizzy haze. Friday was better. I thought things were working well. Finally a little relief. Saturday I almost felt normal.

And then the blizzard began.

I have always gotten headaches from pressure changes, but this brought on the vertigo almost non stop. I called in sick Monday (today) and plan to stay in bed tomorrow too. Got a sub plan (2) all in place. I have nearly a hundred and twenty sick days banked, which would mean this is no problem at all, except...

The blizzard.

My school division has a policy that you cannot call in sick when there's inclement weather and if you do you must provide a dr's note or be docked salary. So, I need to go back to the doctor. Great. Not for treatment, but for a note.

So, again...blizzard.

Driveway blown over.

Husband still in Minneapolis (and will stay until June if that's what it takes.)

Snowblower broken.

Driveway too big to shovel...and remember...vertigo. No way.

So I call a service and talk to a wonderful lady who says "No problem. We'll come tonight."

I'm amazed. Above and beyond. Now I can go to the doctor's tomorrow (not that I should be behind the wheel, but I'm out of options and there's a walk in clinic that involves back streets only so I can go five kmph if necessary).

Here's the part that encapsulates MY LIFE IN A NUTSHELL.

A plow drives up on the front street about 8:45. He clearly can't read the house numbers in the dark. I call the number back and tell his wife to call him (she's the person answering) and say it's the one with the blue Christmas lights and I'm flashing them.

He comes out, to my walkway, and says that the estimate they gave was too low. I say, "Okay, how much do you want?" He doesn't answer, hums and haws, and says they'll go with what they said.

I say fine. The money is already in an envelope taped to the door (he's about twenty feet away from me). He doesn't know it, but I've also included a ten dollar Starbuck's gift card. (I keep them around as thank yous for people who work outside in the winter...)

He goes back to his truck and sits there for twenty plus minutes, not moving.

Fine.

Then HE calls me and keeps me on the phone for fifteen minutes. Whining. He won't tell me what the point of our call is. He mentions that he'd rather come back in a few days (???!!!?!?!?!!? I asked for tomorrow. YOU GUYS offered tonight. If you can't do it, I'll have to find someone else. I'm not sitting here waiting for you indefinitely.)

I say repeatedly in my oh so patient and gentle teacher voice, "So what is it you're saying? Are you asking for more money? I don't mind paying extra. I thought your quote was pretty low. Do you want to come back tomorrow? I need to go out, but can work around that. What do you want?"

He won't answer. Twenty minutes in the driveway, and then fifteen MORE minutes of my life playing cat and mouse on the phone.

He tells me his wife made him do this. He's really really tired. He doesn't know how to get this done. He just wants to go home.

"Fine," I say. "So you're saying you just want to forget this altogether? Is that what you're saying?"

He won't commit.

I do not have the time, energy, or personal wellness today to counsel him for this long. I don't mean to be mean, but he would not get off the phone.

Finally, I said, "I'm sorry. I don't know what you're telling me. Are you saying you just want to leave now? I'm not mad. I just really need to know what you want." (Seriously, I'm talking to the guy in his truck at the end of my snowy driveway, and I need to carry HIM through this?)

So finally he says, "Well, if you won't let me come back in a few days..."

I say, "I'm sorry. I can't sit in this house for the next several days. If you can't do this job then fine. I'm not angry. I'll find someone else, but I can't hold it for you indefinitely."

He continues to try to convince me that he's got so many clients that he really can't fit me in until at least Friday or Saturday.

I keep telling him I'm not mad (I'm not, but I'm starting to question MY sanity in this conversation) but that if he just wants to go our separate ways, that's fine. He still wants to talk about how tired he is, and if I could just let him come back in a few days.

So, I said, "Look. I've no problem with you calling it a night and leaving now. I will find someone else to do the driveway tomorrow. I don't mean to sound harsh, but I don't think you should be asking me to hold it for you for a few days. I have to go places, too. I am not home indefinitely. Let's just say good-bye. No hard feelings." (I think I'm a saint for that last line, by the way.)

As I'm hanging up I can hear him starting up again with the "I'm sorry. I just need to come back in a few days."

So I watch out the window. He sits for five more minutes at the foot of my driveway before driving off. Total time over thirty minutes. I doubt this job would have been that long.

I called his wife back (business line) and let her know I was not angry, but that I was very confused by his call. She apologized profusely of course, and I made it clear I'm not angry, but that I found the lengthy phone call, well, troubling.

I am not mad. But I am exhausted. I then went out and at least shovelled the walkway (took about 90 seconds). I did it without a jacket (Winnipeggers are tough cookies) and it felt good, until the wave of vertigo took over.

So, now I'm here. Wondering why this sort of thing ALWAYS happens to me. Why do I always end up counseling strangers? I just needed my driveway done so I don't lose two days of pay for being legitimately ill.

Thank you. Melt down now over.

But this story is exactly why I KNEW when I got up this morning that something would have to go horribly wrong with shipping Rudy. Because if I am involved something weird has to happen. That's a given. I'm hoping my "curse" is over and tomorrow can just be smooth sailing.

I also predict I'll wake up and find the plow driver at the end of my driveway again, just sitting and watching. You think I'm kidding, but I'm really not. That's just how my life goes...seriously. I must put out one heck of a vibe.

We now return to our regularly scheduled chatboard. I'm going to go upstairs and watch a gory slasher film. I always find that comforting.
Oh Tracie, that is horrible 8O

I hope tomorrow brings a plowed driveway, a world not spinning and making you sick, a Dr's note to cover work and a new OES and your same old husband coming home soon!
And now on a happier note.

Hudson misses his daddy and the video chats on the computer just freak him out, so he put on daddy's hat and decided to wait for him.

Unfortunately, he has a short attention span, so he ended up chewing on the hat about a half minute after this photo was taken. Don't tell my husband I said that!

Image
oh, Hudson looks so CUTE!!!
Hard to believe he is the naughty boy - he looks like an angel :hearts:
Love Hudson's 'daddy hat'!
Hudson looks VERY cute and VERY patient. :D

I came to check your thread hoping Rudy was there all safe and sound, and your hubby too. :D

I'm so disappointed for you.

I so feel for you with the vertigo. I've had it too. Probably Meniere's as my Mom has it. But I was lucky and it went away before I got properly diagnosed. It was just awful, when I could get around it felt like I was walking on a ship and the ground kept going up and down all the time.

Take care of yourself. Drink lots of fluids I still get mild vertigo if I'm dehydrated. I've got to be careful with caffeine, if I'm dizzy it makes me worse. Too much salt is a trigger for Mom and I and stress and fatigue sets us both of badly.

Hope you get you're doctors cert and that Rudy and hubby are there real soon. :crossed:
Can the Dr not fax you the note? It seems horrible to make you leave in weather like you are having.
I am so sorry about the delay with Rudy. I would be going nuts.

What Dawn said. (sorry you're going through this.) ( I thought he was "killing" time at your driveway so that his wife wouldn't know that he didn't plow your snow.)
Sounds like you are going through a bit of a difficult time. But, you know, things happen for a reason. Today the weather is better for us so I hope its better for you and for Rudy's flight. Just think of it as it wasn't safe to fly yesterday and Rudy was safe and happy with the lady from Rescue..

My fingers are crossed for his safe homecoming to you today...How is hubby holding up? He sounds like a great man. My husband would have killed me!

Come home Rudy!!!! Mommy sounds like she needs you!!!
So I woke up with a slightly brighter attitude today. Can't help it. Hudson was standing on my chest, licking my face.

Still haven't figured out the driveway thing, but I have this super amazing car (seriously, it's been like the superhero of cars its whole, 19 year old so far, life).

So my plan is to back out of the garage through the snow going super fast. As long as I don't stop I may be okay. Then a back road drive to the walk in clinic where I'll hopefully be able to get that note.

Not much of a plan. But I need to have something, so it'll have to do. Wish me luck.
Good luck! I hope your driveway is straight, short and slightly downhill!

Was it the storm up (down to you) here that cancelled Rudy?
According to the service the flight was cancelled due to winds in Florida yesterday. Rudy was left at the airport today, and I'm just waiting for confirmation that he is on the plane. (Candy's going to call and make sure.) When she dropped him off it was looking good.

I almost made it out of my long and semi crooked driveway. And I would have, General Lee style, but I turned my head to check the road and a wave of vertigo hit. I slowed down (big mistake as the drift was about 32 inches there) and am now stuck in a snowbank. In hindsight, I shouldn't have been driving anyway, and it's a good thing it happened in my driveway.

My mom took me to the doctor, then called them from her car to complain I was taking so long and to update them on where she was parked (she's what many would call a "character") but they took good care of me anyway - but didn't tell me where she parked. I can't hold that against them.

I have my note, and am off the rest of the week (a good thing - I can't take care of children and teach them important things if I keep falling down).

My FIL is coming over later to help move my car out of the snow. I cleared the drive tires but can't get it rocking. I think I'm actually hung up on the undercarriage, and can't crawl around in my current condition. So now I'm just sitting here, holding my breath, waiting to hear Rudy's in the air.

Fingers crossed. Nothing else is really important now anyway.
Geesh! What a horrible day!! I've had vertigo too, and it is absolutely the worst feeling in the world. As for the snow just leave it if you have a car that can drive through it. That snow plow guy is a total idiot! I wouldn't give him a second chance since he was ready to leave you stranded. What happened to some common decency?

Hope today will be a MUCH better day and Rudy will land safely in Minneapolis. :ghug:

Hudson is sooo cute with his hat on! What a gentleman!
CANDY CALLED.

Hang in there Tracie, Rudy is on his way home!
Yippee!

And it's a gorgeous sunny day in MN, so there should be no holdup on this end!
I actually have tears in my eyes for you and Rudy. Yippeeee!!

:yay: :yay: :yay: :yay: :yay: :yay:
OH MY!!!!

I just went to Rudy's Petfinder page (linked in the first post on this thread) to peek at him again (something I've been doing ten or fifteen times a day for a while now), and next to his name it says:

ADOPTED

Now, it's so real.

He's coming home to us.

I'm crying.

I'll be posting pictures just as soon as I can.

Tracie
Fantastic!! We are all crying with you. Lucky Rudy is on his way home to you! :D
Yay!!!! :clappurple: :yay:  :excited: :cheer:
Regarding the plow story: if this guy shows up, driving a plow, why wouldn't he just start plowing instead of sitting in the driveway complaining? Couldn't he have finished in the time it took to walk to your door and then call you? Is your driveway like a mile long? I find people in any profession that involves snow or a rake to be incredibly unreliable and usually weird.
got me crying with joy for you
Candy called. The flight has landed. Gordon (hubby) is in the airport, and not aware of this fact. (He's waiting at the right counter, but they haven't told him yet.)

How that lady sees all, knows all....she is truly amazing.

Just waiting for an update from Gordon.
The driveway guy is, well, interesting - whining for 30 minutes on how exhausted he is when the driveway could have been plowed in that time frame is strange indeed. Between Rudy's delay, driveway man, getting stuck in the driveway, the vertigo, and then having to secure a doctor's note in the snow storm makes a full plate. BUT, Rudy is at the airport awaiting your love and caring heart and should help quell the waters. We can't wait hear more of this continuing saga, especially Rudy's arrival.
WOW! Sorry for all you have been thru. We all have our "time." This too shall pass. HA I hate when someone says that and I am in the middle of a mess. But it is true.

Did Rudy arrive?
Now THAT is an odd snow plow story!

I'm thinking the guy was losing it. Snow plow drivers around here call the money they earn "blood money", the insanely long hours to make money after a storm coupled with the back and forth and blade up and down probably can make them go a little nutty.
