information for a newbie

When you got a puppy what kind of information did your breeder give you? What do you wish you had been given?

As a breeder what do you give the new owners of your puppies? (especially newbies to the breed)

Just wondering we really enjoyed dealing with our breeder but were lacking some bits of information which would have been helpful.

Thanks.

Good question.

Let me turn that around for a moment: what did you feel was lacking?

My puppies go out with a stack of health information: what testing was done on them and their parents, known health risks in the line, their vaccination information, as well as what they are currently eating and how much, that kind of thing. Beyond that I'll note that I prefer to get them off puppy food before they're six months old, please don't jump them repetitively/at any great height till their growth plates are closed, and it's in the dog's best interest not to be desexed until their growth plates have closed at the very least, if not later. I don't emphasis the "later" with pet owners whom I sense are already daunted by the idea of keeping the puppy's genitals intact for more than absolutely need be. If I thought they weren't capable of responsibly owning an intact dog for any length of time, they wouldn't be getting a puppy from me anyway, so I'm not concerned about encouraging them to let their puppy mature as much as they can before they spay or neuter. I'll also discuss vaccination protocols if I sense they may not be aware of the newer protocols.

Frankly, I've only had one puppy go to a promising newbie home - a home that was close by and that I was in contact with constantly - and I still ended up taking him back at a year old, so at this point I prefer to avoid homes that aren't already familar with the breed's exercise, training and grooming requirements. Along those lines if I had my way any puppy I bred would only go to performance homes because you don't have to babysit them at all, I guess I'm a bit lazy in that regard  , plus these are homes that tend to share my own interests - I'm met some really great people this way - and I'm more likely to get to see the puppy regularly as he or she matures since we'll be running in the same circles so to speak anyway. And the puppy gets the life I had hoped for for him or her.

Just my very personal bias. Not very helpful for you, but still a great question. I suspect every breeder emphasizes things a bit differently based on their experiences and so on.

I asked about the puppy's schedule, well no real schedule. Eats at about 7:00 pm only fed once a day, the puppy is 7 months old. I had to ask about the schedule and food the puppy was eating, expected to be provided this information but was glad I asked just disappointed inthe answers. Exercise played with other dogs, the puppy had never gone for a walk before.

We were given grooming information (even some grooming supplies), a book on the breed, we had seen the puppy's parents papers (weren't given a copy),and we met the mom.

Really it was not knowing the schedule the pup was on before that really bothered me. I wanted to gradually change the puppy's schedule from the breeders to our family. It was a good time to do this we were on holidays and could do the adjustment easily.

Thanks for sharing your information, I think it will help people looking to get a puppy and what to expect for information. Also a reminder of what to ask at time of delivery or at sending of the puppy.
