nails

The groomer has always done my dogs nails, but they are growing so fast on Harry &Oliver they hurt us when they paw or jump. How far back can you cut them...all the way to the pink? Please help

Have a look at this pic. I think it demonstrates it pretty well.

You definitely don't want to cut all the way into the quick because it'll bleed. You can grind or file them if you aren't exactly sure of yourself (as I'm not!). I'm a baby about cutting nails since I'm so scared I'm going to hurt them.
Nice visual. :D
You actually can trim or grind up a bit closer. As you get close to the quick, a small circle appears in the center of the nail when viewed from the end. Stop at that point, as another trim will likely cause the quick to be cut and cause bleeding. If you are grinding, you can shape it in a rounded fashion a bit, and this helps get the quick to receded. If you do this often, the nail (and quick) will become shorter without causing bleeding or pain.
I hate trimming nails especially the black ones, always paranoid of hitting the quick as you cant see how far to trim down.

Dremmels (Sp) are good, I sometimes borrow one from a friend to grind those darn black ones.

Wish they stayed pink makes it so much easier to see where to trim.
I use a dremel. Unfortunately I lose track of time & then I remember to do nails when I hear them clicking on the floor. My New Year's resolution this year is to check nails once a week. If I grind them back each week I can eventually get them shorter. Better especially for my boy in agility.
I've got everyone covered in the nail department: no more than 2 weeks in between, weekly, yes, Marilyn  for the dogs working in agility. Everyone except Belle, that is. Who is AWFUL about it. At 12, I REALLY hate fighting with her on the table. I never nick a dog except, yup, you guessed it, the hysterical one, thus reinforcing her hysteria over the procedure <sigh>

She's also the only dog who's kicked me in the face in the process 8O :? Just last week, in fact. It's like a rodeo. We both end up needing a stiff drink afterwards. :twitch:

Sounds like me & Melody. She'd let me do anything to her except cut her nails. She'd squeal before the clipper ever touched her nail. Tried the dremel on her but by then anything being done to her nails (not her feet) was so ingrained in her that I couldn't even use the dremel on her. I used to take her to the vet here every so often to get them trimmed. She'd let him do it. Invariably they bled a bit. Or if Cathy was around, she'd let Cathy trim her nails with the clipper. Melody was the main reason I looked into using a dremel. My other dogs have never given me a problem about their nails.
I run through mine every two weeks as well. Chewie is the exception, as he needs longer vs shorter nails for different sports.

For example, I trimmed them like usual when we have therapy dog visits, shows. Shorter for agility. Longer for sledding and weigh pulls.

I had him trimmed before the last show 2 weekends ago. Then I let them grow for last weekend as we were out sledding and I knew the snow would be abrasive (and grinding them down more), as well as needing the nails for traction. No agility class the 3rd Tuesday d/t KC meeting (this week), so they got to keep growing.

I have a fun one coming up in February. I already am planning this one out! Saturday the 13th is a snow pull - so he definitely needs longer nails for traction. But Sunday is our 1st agility trial, so I will be trimming them down Saturday night! I hope we have no knicks - that would be really bad timing. Talk about trimming under pressure! 8O
Has anyone tried the Gentle Paw grinder by Oster?
