"Baggage" by Evelyn Colbath Now that I'm home, bathed, settled and fed, All nicely tucked in my warm new bed. I'd like to open my baggage Lest I forget, There is so much to carry - So much to regret. Hmm . . . Yes, there it is, right on the top Let's unpack Loneliness, Heartache and Loss, And there by my leash hides Fear and Shame. As I look on these things I tried so hard to leave - I still have to unpack my baggage called Pain. I loved them, the others, the ones who left me, But I wasn't good enough - for they didn't want me. Will you add to my baggage? Will you help me unpack? Or will you just look at my things - And take me right back? Do you have the time to help me unpack? To put away my baggage, To never repack? I pray that you do - I'm so tired you see, But I do come with baggage - Will you still want me? |

Thanks for posting this. I have it in my dog file but it is buried. Resaving will put it closer at hand!
Always respect rescues and give them time to settle in. Some take up to a year to unpack their baggage. |
This is beautiful. Thanks for posting. |
So true.... |
Exactly the way I felt about the one I helped transport last Saturday. Usually they are a bit more "bouncy" & happy to go with whomever. This one seemed sad. My exact thoughts were "I sure hope her new home gives her time to settle in. I think she's feeling a bit shuffled around right now". |

She will....it takes time sometimes! Thanks for transporting the special gal! Every pup needs friends along the way! |
I read your poem while waiting for our rescue (Rudy) to complete his final leg on the journey to his forever home.
It made me cry. (Although to be fair, I am an emotional wreck waiting for him.) I know we are prepared for whatever he needs, and will give him all the love in the world. We are so ready to help him unpack whatever baggage he may bring. Thanks for sharing the poem. It's a great reminder that no matter what happens, he'll need time and patience. And he absolutely deserves as much time as he needs, no matter what. |
