Thyroid dosage?

Anyone out there who gives their dog thryoid meds, we use Soloxine ( spelling?), can you tell me your dogs weight and dosage?

My dog, 110 pounds, started on one and a half in the am and one in the pm. But he started showing signs of sluggish-ness ( is that a word?) and the Doc upped his dose to one and a half both am and pm....

Hhe was restested and the levels were borderline so originally we wanted to keep his dose as low as possible. Now that we've upped it, we will be restesting him in about three weeks.

Anyway, I thought I remembered reading the dogs here on the forum using thryoid, are dosing 1 and a half twice a day for that weight.

Any thoughts, advice or encouragement at this point would be appreciated!
Thanks!

Yeah Morg takes 1.5 tabs twice a day of thyroxine. He normally varies in weight form 110 to 120.

He started out at one tab 2X a day, went to 1.5 am and 1 pm and we settled at 1.5 2X's a day.
I don't know if it is the same, but I am on thyroid medicine and my doctor told me that the dosage was more a function of how long the problem has existed than on any personal characteristic of the person (age, weight, sex, etc.). Basically, as time passes, they will likely need to increase my dose.
Oh C*** I just went to get the med bottle and read we are suppose to give Glacier her meds 2X a day. Hell-o!

The bottle says Thyro-Tabs, Levothyroxine sodium. 0.6 mg for a 95 lb dog...should be twice a day.

Vet said the dosage (?sp) is based on dog's "mass" not so much weight. So how they figure "mass" vs "weight".......I dunno.
Kerry, that is exactly how we started. One and a half am and one pm...and now just upped to one and half both am and pm. We just started the meds less than 6 months ago so I guess we are still "tweaking" the correct dose.

I will say my dog has been a completely different dog since starting the pills. Back to his "old self", more alert, more playful. It really was an amazing change. He didn't lose any weight but has remained the same so that's good too.

Thanks for everyone's input.
Turns out DH has been giving thyroid at night along with the incontinence pill..........phew!

There is a change in behavior, she is more peppy, alert and wants to be outside all the time, not sleeping inside.
Yes, sheepiedog. That's what I found. Before he just wanted to sleep on the couch in the house. WOuldn't even get up to greet me when I came in and in the morning, wouldn't get up at all. He also had been very sick with the MRSA virus so we thought that was it but after testing the thryoid, we found it low. So nice to have my happy dog back!

I'm starting to think I should take the pills for myself

Yes my results as well.
not sure what you mean by one and a half pills am /pm. soloxine comes in different doses(0.4,0.5,0.6 etc.). I have a dog on .4 and a dog on .5(both 2xs a day same dose). I have heard of dogs receiving one dose a day, not sure why since it only lasts in system 12 hours and must be replenished for the next 12 hours. Make sure when you retest blood it is several hours(check with your vet 4-6 hours seems familiar)after you give am dosage. Also to ensure proper absorption(not sure this is correct medical reason, check with dr. Dodds) she recommends 1 hour before the meal or 3 hours after the meal.
When our Portage was about 90 pounds he took one thyrotab 2X a day. They were the .6 dosage. When we tested he was then too high, so they ordered in the same tabs at the .5 dosage instead. Put him right where he needed to be.

I think it varies by the chemistry of the dog - trial and error for the right dosage.

He did very well on two of the slightly lower dose per day.
I believe when we last got tested, we had to give the pill at least three hours but not more than 6 before taking blood. And I'm not sure what the milligram dosage is. I can't read it on the label...my eyes are gtting old! But it is a tiny small blue color pill and we give one and 1/2 in the morning and same at night. We go back this week so I will ask what the dosage amount is just so I know.
