Pooping in the crate

I need help! My wonderful almost 10 week old OES Bonnie is not getting the housebreaking business. I know that OES can be difficult to housebreak, but I just want light at the end of the tunnel. She is not getting the nighttime thing at all. I can let her out every hour, restrict her water, and she still pees and poops in her crate (it is not too big for her). She also eats her poop on occasion if I can't get to her in time. During the day she seems to be doing better, but nights are killing me. I want to know if this is normal behavior (poop eating), and any other tips. She is otherwise a calm, sweet, wonderful dog. Any advice will be appreciated, or just someone saying that this too shall pass.

Take a deep breath...

Cute puppies but a lot of HARD work.

I don't remember what to put in food that makes poo taste bad(as if its not bad enough) but I'm sure some one will chime in.

I guess I got lucky with Simon, he didn't pee or poop in his crate. Lots of getting up in the middle of the night though.

Ten weeks is a little young to expect to hold it all night. Where do you place the crate? I put it right next to the bed so I could hear if they got restless during the night. That meant they had to go.

Good luck..and yes, this too shall pass.
My little girl does the poo eating thing too. I looked it up. It's called coprophagia, which many people used to think was a sign of vitamin deficiency, or something medical, but now it's thought to be purely behavioral. Puppies learn the habit from their mommas, who eat the poo of the puppies naturally to keep the whelping area clean. They have no idea how disgusting we think it is.

Anyway, at the pet store look for coprophagia stopping tablets. You feed them to the pup and they make the poo taste unappealing to them. (Hard to believe you would need a pill for that.)

On crate training, Ecco is doing very well. We make sure every time she goes potty outside we use the cue word "Potty" as she goes, then immediately say "Yes" (positive marker) and reward her with a small training treat. If she wee-wees in the house or in the crate , we make no mention of it to her, just clean up, move on, and hope we catch the next one outside. We also follow the standard puppy house training rule - ANY time she eats, wakes up from a nap, finishes playing, or otherwise changes her activity, we go right outside for a potty break.

She is 12 weeks now, and sleeps through most of the night thanks to her sister, Kendra, who keeps her playing all day so she is exhausted at night time.

I hope this helps. Good luck!
I've never used any of the remedy's suggested for dogs that eat poop. I've only had 1 that did it. The thing has always been here that we've always had multiple dogs so I'd have the expense of giving it to multiple dogs just becasue of 1. I found it much easier to just get into a routine of cleaning up the dog run anytime anyone pooped. And really, it won't hurt them. It's just disgusting to us. My vet says some dogs "just do it".
