I've had the Dr's office confirm the use of liquid ivermectin as a means for heartworm prevention instead of using Heartgard. Ivermectin is one of the active ingredients in Heartgard. Also, at a wholesale, online, their vet told me that the patent for Heartgard is now up and they carry a generic version of Heartgard in a chewable pill. Both options are incredibly cheaper. Has anyone tried either method? Thanks guys! BTW, tomorrow, officially, I will adopt Winston (5 yrs old or so) and Foxey (15 1/2 or so). Winston's the sheepie, Foxey...not really sure other than she's the sweetest EVER! So Abi is in heaven now...officially. Dee |

great info, I'm going to ask my vet about the generic version. |
Please post what he/she says. I'd love to know. |
He there! well as you know ivermectin can cause a reaction if the dog is MDR (Kristine can explain that so much better then I can!).
We are using triheart with our dogs - the hard chewable version of heartguard at my vet's suggestion since its cheaper (funny he didn't tell hubby that and he still buys heartguard for his two ) WHatever you find out about the liquid ivermectin, make sure its a reliabel site - we have a sticky here somewhere with the FDA recommendations on how to make sure you are not buying counterfeit meds online. Have fun with your new doggies and hugs to Abi. |
I found the liquid at my feed store. They sell it to the plantation owners since they always have multiple dogs. I don't know too much about the medical history of either. I will check with their vet tomorrow when I can officially ask as their mommy. thanks for the heads up. |
