No.
Clip or shave away. It is what it is and it just keeps growing that way. Puppies will go through (often horrible <brrr>) coat changes. but that's a natural progression. Shaving them at this point can relieve the matting nightmare (dead coat) and though it won't make the adult coat come in any faster, it tends to seem that way as you see it more clearly earlier. And I don't just mean because you're not viewing the puppy/dog through tears after having spent the last 4 hours dematting one side just to discover the other side, which you groomed the day before, is now matted. The loss of hormones that results from spaying/neutering will generally degrade coat quality (not a reason in and of itself to not desex the dog, the coat changes are primarily cosmetic), as will hypothyroidism and certain other illnesses/conditions, but cutting it off has no bad effects and can often be a blessing! The coat as they mature is never straight anyway they have a crisp break in the guard hairs of the double coat. Like a crinkle with the soft downy undercoat.
Your lad is still in puppy coat and has two major changes still to go through before the coat is fully mature. Next stage, Junior coat then later on the full mature coat blooms through. Rotten stage both of them as the matt fairies breed big time. |
