Please Help Me (can't find breeder near me)! :( :( :(

Hi all, I have been looking into getting a puppy for the past few years now, and I am becoming quite frustrated. I would really not prefer to have my puppy "shipped" as I would like to meet the breeder and puppy before I make a decision. I have contacted everyone on the breeder referral list that is within 5 hours of my home, and no one is breeding anymore! I don't exactly want to rescue because I feel my Maltese would deal better with a puppy rather than a grown dog. So, with that said, ANY SUGGESTIONS?! I live in Fredericksburg, VA and am willing to travel anywhere within 5 hours radius. NJ, PA, WV, MD, NC, DC, or VA are all fine. Please PM me with any breeder information you may have. I have been following this site for quite some time, and all of you OES owners are all so nice and helpful when it comes to these things! (and anything for that matter!) :D

Thank-you so much!
~Andrea

I understand your point of not wanting a pup shipped BUT,
my pup was shipped(he was a rescue being deaf)
He did fine on his flight!

If you want a sound temperment and health tested
pup it is going to cost a few more dollars...

The vet care is going to cost you more than that in a
life time....

I can't remember where you posted
Have you had an OES before??
I felt like you, at first...After talking to breeders and finding that a quality breeder would not be in my area, I began a relationship with my breeder. Many phone calls, many, many emails and my 'gut' told me I could trust her. Many breeders will choose a puppy for you. Letting them know what you are planning to do with your puppy will give them a good idea of which puppy will be most suited to you, your lifestyle and your goals.

For example, my main reason for getting an OES puppy was ~~ I already had one. I loved the clownishness and the joyfulness of this breed. My OES Pearl (a rescue from th Humane Society) was 12 at the time and a therapy dog. I wanted to make sure this puppy was relatively calm and had a stable temperament. My breeder knew all the puppies since she was with them 24/7 nurturing them, watching them, loving on them so she picked the one that she thought would meet my needs.

I trusted my breeder's expertise, knowlege and experience and I am proud to tell you that Heart 'flew' into my heart, by plane from Colorado on Aug, 31th, 2007. ( with no adverse reactions)

She is now 2 1/2, we just graduated from the therapy program here. She has her novice Rally title, her CGC, and, this year, we will be working toward her advanced rally title and novice agility.

I am still great friends with my breeder. She has visited a couple time with 2 of Heart's littermates who are show champions and we will be friends forever.

So, my advice to you is don't be afraid to go outsite your 5 hour rule. You will be happier if you find a quality breeder who really cares about her puppies and you!!!

Good Luck and please keep us posted!!!!! :D :D

Yes, I am starting to think I may have to have my puppy flown to me. I just didn't think finding a breeder would be so difficult! I definitely understand "you get what you pay for". I don't mind paying the extra for the health tested puppies...I am expecting it. I'd rather have sound mind knowing I did everything I could in the beginning to prevent any health issues *if* one were to arise in the future.
I have not posted anywhere before, this pup would be my first Sheepdog, I've been in love with the breed since I was very young. I have done extensive research and visited any adult dogs I could to get a better feel for the breed before I got one of my own. Thank-you for replying to my post!

Yes, I have definitely trusted my gut in a few situations in the past and am glad I did. I definitely know what I want and know what I'm looking for, it's just a little weird to me to have someone pick a dog for me. (Maybe I'm a bit of a control freak, too. ) Thank-you for your advice! After 3 years of searching it's frustrating to feel like I'm starting from step 1 all over again, but I know it will be worth it in the end! :D
One word of caution, since this is your first OES, you are actually better off finding a breeder near you for the support if you can OR getting in touch with other OES people in your general area, of which there are many. The forum is great but we can't stop by your house and show you how to clean poopie butts or how to trim a butt or how to brush the dog properly or etc etc etc

In the mean time if you haven't spoken to Mandy, you may want to PM her (Maxmm) to pick her brain a bit. I know there aren't a lot of litters born to reputable breeders any more, but you should be in an area where there are at least SOME litters on occasion. 8O

Any way you cut it, near or far, a serious breeder is most likely going to pick the puppy for you based on your background (ideally, you need a puppy who would be kind to newbies  ). I.e. the breeder uses his or her knowledge to make the best match possible. What happens if you fall in love with Mr In-Your-Face Puppy who will challenge you every step of the way and you're like me, a big softie doormat wannabe?   This is how dogs end up getting returned to their breeders and that's not good for anyone.

Fingers crossed for you.

Kristine
Remember too, you can always fly yourself to the breeders house when the time comes to pick up your puppy. This way you will be able to visit the breeders home, meet all of their dogs, and most importantly, get one on one training as far as grooming goes. I have had quite a few people (actually I have a couple from BC who are getting a pup from my spring litter who are flying here in March) who have one of my puppies that live far away do this and trust me, it is a great feeling also for the breeder as well to have met you in person and know that they have taught you alot of the essentials of caring for your OES.

Another plus - the puppy will be able to fly back with you in the cabin.

Just another option.
I've tried to send you a private email but something is wrong with my 'out' box..............

please email me oesgwynedd@msn.com

Joyce at Whisperwood is in MD. I've had two Whisperwood dogs and couldn't have been happier.

Aw, all of my kids all go back to Joyce's dogs. Belle is a Swinger (Witch Doctor) granddaughter. I love Joyce's temperaments, fun loving but so biddable and sweet. Unfortunately she rarely breeds any more and when she does the pups tend to be spoken for five times over. I have a good agility friend who has been waiting for several years now and getting a wee bit cranky about it   :P

My boy Oliver was a Swinger son!

Miss Ellie has Witch Doctor 3 generations back.

Guess I better get on a list if I ever want another pup from Joyce. I've got time to wait.

My dog, what a small world! That made him Belle's half-uncle, I guess.

That is too cool! He looks like a sweetheart.

Kristine
Oh! That reminds me: that means he was also Chewie's great-great uncle. Unfortunately for him that also means he was Sybil's great-great uncle, but we won't hold that against him

Well, so much for my instructions to her to stay OFF the computer when I'm not home  :P 8)

Apologies to Ms Ellie whom I belatedly realize I slighted terribly. She's adorable. Who are her parents?

I need to direct my vet to your pics. Her youngest, Hannah, is one of Joyce's as well, a Reid (Wild Biscuit) x Dana (Walk on the Brightside) daughter who goes back to Swinger four generations back on her dam's side.

Heading home to pick up the evil child and the perfect dog so we can go herding. :D And, as usual, I managed to get ANOTHER thread completely sidetracked

Later.

Kristine
Oliver's father was Swinger, his mom was Bizzeboots Nite & Day. He was as exceptional as the two kennels that brought him to me.

Ms Ellie is a doll. Her paperwork was lost by my movers when coming to Utah and I haven't replace it yet ( ). I'm a negligent mom and don't remember her lineage completely.

But back to the original post, On a rare occasion Joyce will have a pup that isn't perfect, and she doesn't have someone on a waiting list to take the pup. That's how I was so very lucky to get Ms. Ellie. She was the runt of a very large litter and too small to show. Other than her small stature, she is gorgeous. Beautiful thick coat, wonderful markings, etc, etc.
I fell in love with a Whisperwood pup at the Nationals - call name Bravo. What a handsome boy. And I met his brother at the Palm Springs show. Also quite handsome.

It seems nearly everyone I know is breeding or has recently bred their dogs, so if you want a puppy NOW, you might have an issue. But if you want to be first on the list to have your puppy early spring, I would think your timing would be perfect.

I chose to select a breeder who lived nearby. It makes a world of difference to have the resource close. I have never regretted that decision.

Good luck!
