Collars

What kind of collar should we start our puppy on? My mom said something about the nylon collars are bad or something like that. Would leather collars be okay???? :?:

What's the problem wtih nylon collars? Just curious as I've never heard that before. Our vet even sells them in her clinic.

I ordered Jasper's through here: http://pettags.com/ We got him the $21.99 special with the lost pet recovery tag if he ever goes missing (he's microchipped to if anything happens to the collar). His collar and leash also have his name and our phone # (cell phone) printed on it. I think I've only ever used nylon collars, except when we were leash training our stubborn GSD and used a choke chain until she learned how to walk the leash. Then, the GSD had a nylon collar the time she wasn't on a leash, so basically I'm not help. LOL

Good luck with your search for a collar. :)
LOL. I'm not real sure if it was nylon collars, or what it was. I'll have her post here when she gets home... she'll be here any minute
lol ok, no more reading out loud when they are close enough to hear

i dont remember what site i was at when reading, but it said something about the nylon collars could rub the fur off the neck and to use a show collar, and my response ofcourse was "what the heck is a show collar? :? " lol and after getting his name embroidered on a nylon collar, i sure hope they are fine to use  lol
We use nylon collars and only have minimal hair loss if a piece gets caught on one of the metal attachments for the tags. You may also have some knots underneath the collar from it turning or spinning while he is wearing it.
Be sure to watch the collar's size also. They grow so fast that it may need frequent adjusting. Make sure that you can put two fingers between the collar and his neck.
Show collars are collar/leash contraptions that work similar to a choke collar, I believe. Reminder: Never leave any kind of self tightening collar on a dog unsupervised.
I always use nylon collars, a leather collar will leak dye into the coat when it gets wet. I prefer a nylong collar with a snap plastic buckle, about an inch and a half thick, however, I have been told these collars ruin coat growth and cause matting around the neck. I switched to a show type collar (thin, round, not flat) and I hate it. LOL I find it gets tangled and causes mats when the other kind never did.
Hi All
When I first got Cassie, I put a nice red leather collar on her...she is a rescue so she was shaved down. After a couple days, I noticed she had a pink ring around her neck 8O Hmmm... the collar was fading. Yikes! It eventually went away after a bath but I switched to nylon..pink this time!
We used a nylon with a plastic snap in buckle until he started to really pull on walks, then we switched to the stainless steel "self correcting" collar and he does great on it. I think he even likes it better and he doesn't pull on the leash so much no walks now.
I like the nylon with the pastic snap also. The nylon seems to slip around pretty good etc. I also have used leather dark brown for boys and the dye turned the fur brown when Roger got wet. Show leads are usually jewel link or nylon collar and the best don't use a nylon lead part because they spring out of your hand as I have read. So a show collar is one that is as small as is practicle and can be tightened up to cinch around the neck as close to the ears as possible, so you can control the head. Thats why for training purposes you need to use something similar to a show collar a link chain choke collar very loosly I might add until you need to give a gentle reminder of who is alpha. I did say gentle. Good luck be sure the dog is safe and comfortable and you will be fine. Don't leave a choke collar on if the dog is off leash.
I use a flat nylon collar with a plastic snap latch for "everyday" use. I have Benny's tags on this collar. However, I use a nylon choke collar for walks. This combination seems to work good for us. I have also heard that it is better to use cotton leashes rather than nylon ones. The reason being that cotton is easier to grasp and less lilkely to cause blisters.
