What does the vet say? |
My goodness. How is it that you had a "breeder dog" with your sheepdog? Were you trying to get her pregnant? Aside from health testing and other pre-breeding-decisions, are you prepared for a litter?
We're here to help, but you need to bring your girl to the vet for a check up and advise on how to handle a litter if there is one. Let us know how else we can help. |
Hi, is this the first litter she may be having? If you think she could be pregnant please see a vet as 5 years old is a little old for a first litter. |
Vet visit they can x-ray her to see and also sometimes you can feel the whelps wriggling inside if just about due.
Bitches as they get older and as each heat passes can look big in the nipples and even swell in the belly but no puppies, called a phantom pregnacy or psuedo one. Affects maiden older entire bitches more, that is they have never had a litter but after the heat they go through all the hormonal issues as if they were preggo. Here is a photo of my pregnant bitches belly about a week before she was due to whelp. Some bitches can swell up like that regardless of wether pups in their or not, so my advice is a vet visit to at least confirm there is something there or wether just a psuedo one so you are well in the know that she is or is not. They can x-ray the belly to see if she is, if she is just about due, calcified skeletons of the whelps should show now if something there. |
Aw, what a cute milk bar........ |
