Advice on finding a rescue OES...many questions

Hi all. I have some questions/thoughts, and was hoping that someone (or many wise someones) here might have some advice for us.

My husband and I have had sheepies for nearly 20 years. Our first was a gorgeous and wonderful cross (BRANDON). When he passed away (suddenly and much too young) we brought two pure bred littermates into our home. Two puppies were an absolute joy, but ten years later having two seniors was horrible. We saw to all their medical needs, surgeries, pills, tests, and would do it all over againin a heartbeat if necessary. They were worth every minute and every penny. Theeps passed away a little over a year and a half ago (a lifetime of meds eventually took their toll on his kidneys). He lived to be ten, and probably would have been put down by some due to his knee problems and other issues. Luckily our vet pioneered the TPLO here (and is known nationally for it) and we were able to keep him going strong for a long time. We brought another puppy (OES) home after we lost Theeps.

Hudson joined our pack. He's evil and wonderful at the same time. We lost Portage (borderline Cushing's, nerve degeneration in his back end, etc) in October.

Losing two so close together nearly killed us. But time has helped, and now my husband and I are thinking about bringing another sheepie into our pack. (Sheepies are like potato chips. Can't have just one!)

I share all of this for background (my apologies to those who've heard it all before.) We were thinking of getting a puppy this summer (I teach, and that would give me lots of time to be home with him). But we both started talking about rescues. We'd love to go that route.

I wish I could say we're noble and would take in a special needs senior if needed, but honestly, we've just been through losing two and can't do that right now. We would, however, be more than willing to take in a somewhat younger dog who needs love, training, or has needs to be addressed. Ideally I'd love a big, strong, happy well adjusted perfect sheepie...but our hearts are open to whomever we find. (Or whomever finds us.)

I live in Winnipeg, and tried to contact the OES rescue person listed online. His email bounced back and when I called his number I spoke to a woman who simply said, "We don't do rescue." She did agree it was the right number, so I don't know if they don't do rescue anymore or never did.

I emailed three Canadian listings. Two are more than a full day's drive and it would be difficult to take time to go that far. One could be done in a weekend if necessary.

So, my questions are:

Would their be any value in my contacting rescues all over North America? Would any be willing to ship a dog and/or adopt them out to us long distance? We have solid experience with sheepies and could get glowing references from our vet, etc if that would help.

Someone also suggested contacting breeders directly and asking if they have any older dogs in need of placements (rather than puppies). Is this a common thing? Would there be any value in doing so?

Also, how do we find a REPUTABLE breeder? Many of you heard my battle with Hudson's breeder. It took the CKC over a year to get him to provide Hudson's documentation and he was caught in several blatant lies and forgeries throughout, but when I asked if at ANY point during the process they would have given him an unfavourable reference if anyone called they told me NO. I am very disillusioned with them. I've written two follow up letters sharing my concerns with CKC and they've gone unanswered. I was told that as long as he EVENTUALLY came up with the documents none of the other stuff mattered. Last time I checked he was advertising multiple litters online, so he's not slowing down by any stretch.

I definitely have followed some of the breeders online here, and would contact them first if we decided to get a puppy in the spring/summer, but timing would be an issue and I'm sure I'd have to consider more than one or two breeders to get the timing right.

So, any advice on how to find a rescue sheepie in our circumstances? We know that it may not work out because of distance, but are very interested in trying. We'd both love to give someone a new lease on life, and have a wonderful Furever home to offer.

Thanks in advance and sorry this is soooo long!

How about Albert from this thread.

It seems he is need of some immediate help.
I can uderstand your shyness from having multiple seniors again, I have 2 tweleve and 2 eights..or nines. Their medicine shelf is bigger than mine!

Remember vet science has come along to where they can now treat medical problems that were once, "we can't do anything about that." So adopting now means you will have medical issues that should be treated. Granted, you had more than your share of major medicals with the last two.

OK, question, when and what. I'd start with Canadian breeders. We have good people here on the list who can guide you. If you don't want to go puppy, I like young adults personally. Still plenty of time and hopefully the major puppy and teenage issues are over. Problem will be young adults may come with a breeder's clause stating the breeder reserves the right to breed this dog and will reclaim it for 4 months to breed and whelp. Our Paige came this way but fortunately the breeder had just had 2 other litters and was overwhlemed and said, "go ahead and spay her."

Second would be US rescues. Some would be willing to work with you, others don't go out of their own little domain. It's their call.

I like getting newbie in early summer when you can work with it, make it a pack member so you can go back to work knowing you have a stable dog back home.

Don't put your plans in stone...........something might come up quickly that would put a great down in your home almost instantly. Be flexible. If something happens in March, great, go with the flow.
I was actually living in Winnipeg last year and enjoyed our time there. Our O.E.S. Canadian group seem to shy away from rescue's stating its an insurance liability issue. The lady you need to speak with is Rhonda Bailey, she lives in the Calgary Alberta area and is a great lady. I know we have talked about starting our own rescue as there just doesn't seem to be one in Western Canada. You are correct in your assumption that most US organizations won't send dogs to Canada in my experience. Try and give Rhonda a e-mail she will respond and is a very caring person. We might just have to get some people together and get something going here in western Canada.

Cheers
Thanks for the suggestions. I've emailed several Canadian contacts yesterday and today. I imagine with the holidays it will be a while before I hear back. I sent an email to Rhonda Bailey (found a link online - hope it still works) and, although I imagine it's a very long shot, I have sent an email re:Albert.

We have no kids (and thus, no grandkids) and the youngest person who ever visits our home is 26 and she's very well behaved. If he were here, I'm sure we'd be a great fit. Perhaps in light of his situation there may be some wiggle room for him. It would be wonderful. I sent my hubby the thread and the information at work, and he'd be delighted to have him here.

I guess we'll just have to wait and see. I'd love to give someone a new, loving, forever home.

If anyone has any further advice, we are all (very appreciative) ears.
I contacted this group OESRofFL they will ship till March and have dogs available.
support ,Hope the problem is solved as soon as possible , :)
