Changed my dog to Wellness by Old Mother Hubbard

Well, we finally changed him over from Purina Beneful dog food to Wellness Super5Mix® Lamb. We've been keeping him on the Beneful since that's what he was eating since he came to us. We transitioned him over 3 days.

First off, there are about 10% more calories per cupful of Wellness than the Purina. We have been (and still are) trying to get him to lose some weight, and he was becoming increasingly food obsessed (ie HUNGRY), so we wanted to be able to keep the volume up and calories down, hoping he would feel more satisfied.

I don't know if the plan worked, but he's lost some weight, still has a little to go, and we've been feeding 3 cups per day. Now that spring is upon us, he will be getting more exercise, so I think the extra calories will be ok, while still slowly losing those last few pounds.

Some observations.

The wellness has about the same amount and level of nutrients; fat is slightly higher, probably accounting for the some of the 10% increase in calories, protein carbs and fiber as the Beneful. But none of the dyes.

The "Lamb" formula is probably mostly fish, and it STINKS like fish. I'm sure that's why the dog loves it. While the label has lamb first, it's probably only marginally ahead of the next two ingredients, both of which are fish: Fish Meal and Whitefish. I'm so certain of my opinion that if you combine the quantities of the fish, it will be nearly double the amount of lamb in the product.

The shape of Wellness kibble is pyramid-like, and consistent. Back in the day with our previous dog, we had fed Neura aslo by Old Mother Hubbard, and it started off as a rough shaped food, almost like shards broken off from a dog bone. then they canged to this shape, which is far superior in our estimation, because the old shape used to have a good percentage of burned edges. The consistent shap also probably allow more kibble to be in a measured cup as it will fit together and pack more densely than will the Beneful. I hope that we aren't really giving 20 or 30% more calories.... :!: :?: :!:

The dog's stool has, very surprisingly, increased substantially in volume. We'll see if this continues. I would have thought that digestion would be more complete, but....

All in all, as long as we keep a clip on the bad to keep down the fishy smell, we're happy with the switch. Not that there's any change in his behavior or attitude or hunger, but because we just feel better spending more money on a higher quality feed.

My girls loved the Wellness Super 5 Mix... and you're right, it does smell really fishy! I did not see any increase in stool volume, however, I wonder if it is a bit rich for many oes because a lot of them barf it up.
I ended up using it just for treats (ironically, it is the only "treat" they get excited about even just a little)
I do think it is a far superior food to anything else on the market right now (JMO) but I don't think it's right for my girls unfortunately on a daily basis.
We originally had our Murphy on Solid Gold puppy at the reccomendation of pet food guru @ the local pet store, but he had issues with keeping it down and teriible gas :(

Then we switched him to welness and the vomiting problem went away, but the gas! Geeeshhh...it'senough to make your eyes water! (again...we switched at the reccomendation of the pet food gugu)

We have been contemplating a move to purina One and see if it does any good, plus it's much less expensive than Wellness. I also noticed that there was a poll in the fourm and it seems people haad decent luck with it.

Have you noticed any problems with the Wellness? Specifically very very (did I mention very) bad/constant/awful/eye watering gas?

I'm curious if Murphy is allergic to something that is in Solid Gold and Wellness (but it's just a hunch and we haven't isolated it yet)
That poll only refers to purina in general, not the many varieties of purina foods, like purina one, beneful, pro plan, puppy chow (ack!) etc....
Which Wellness did you try? A friend of mine had a GREAT GSD named Caliba... but boy, he could clear a room if he was fed any kind of poultry. Once in a while, if you were ahead in the poker game... or wanted to go home early... you might slip the dog a hunk of chicken or turkey... Voila!

But seriously, maybe one without the chicken? Or without the Lamb? You get the idea.
