Thought I'd pick the brains of some very smart people (you!)

So my male GSD (5 yrs. old in Dec.) started having seizures at the very end of Aug./beginning of Sept. They seem to be cyclical in nature - occurring about every two weeks. We have seen four vets (one a specialist) who cannot think of a logical reason why this would happen. He is hypothyridic (hypothyroidic?) - discovered in Oct. although I thought he was from Jan. on (two vets told me I was incorrect and talked me out of testing). As 77% of epileptic dogs do have thyroid issues, I know they are somehow linked. Haven't done an MRI as although it is diagnostic, it won't lead to any difference in treatment. He is on phenobarbital, potassium bromide, meds for his thyroid, melatonin at night & valium during clusters.
So, can anyone think of something that cycles about every two weeks either dogwise or housewise? It kills me to see him go through this. He is perfectly happy and normal when not clustering. During clusters, it is my own personal hell. The seizures last for under a minute but the post-ictal phase includes running full speed into anything and everything (including walls), and acting crazy. Today, during a seizure, the claws on his one foot caught on the mattress so I now have a $5000 mattess with a hole. (I think I will try sewing it but still) *sigh*

Any thoughts???

so sorry - no first hand experience and I am sure its not related, but a friends dog was being treated for cyclical seizures and it was determined later that he had a brain tumor - not sure of the sequence or the diagnosis process.

People can have seizures from stress or other cyclical issues and are very often termed idiopathic because a cause is never found.
Oh, some bizarre thoughts: for example maybe there's something in his food that must build up over a 2 week period until it triggers a reaction.

Reason this comes to mind is I know of a dog that had frequent and horrible seizures. After going the drug route the owner threw in the towel and went with a totally raw diet. The other sheepdog also had some serious health issues. Both made remarkable improvements! Seizures all but eliminated and other other dog's condition...which was nearly at death's door, reversed and he lived another.....9 years??

This being the only change in their environment.....change of food so makes one think.....what's going on??

The connection with food may be long and convuluted to where only the most dedicated research vet highly funded (and not by dog food companies) would figure out...surely not your typical vet.

If not food caused, then some endocrine build up that triggers the epidsodes.
what about lighting? people can have an episode with flashing lights, such as driving in a treed area that has the sun breaking thru the trees. Photo sensitivity with flickering lights that is why video games now have warnings on them as they can trigger a seziure.

I think food or environmental such as cleaning products, laundry detergents? Are you using anything new in the house since this started? Cleaning products, dog food/treats or even new dog toys. Some toys or products from over seas have some pretty heavy chemicals to preserve them for the trip over. Things we might not notice a dog would
