Gail-
He has quite a growth curve going there ! They really grow alot in the beginning. Our sheepie was about 20 lbs when we got him at 8 wks. Now at 10 months, he is 80 lbs !!!! Thats why its important to keep with training schedule, they have a lot of weight and power under that shaggy coat. Its important if you have small children or elders around. Sheepies play hard, and don't know their own strength ! |
Roger gained a solid 2 lbs per week he is now 70lbs at 20 months. Be careful to feed the right amount, if you have an over eater on your hands. To rapid of growth is not good for the bones & joints and research shows they get to the same adult weight anyway just with stronger bones with the proper amount of food. I posted some nutrition sites in other posts check those out also. Research, read, feed premium, the best you can figure out food. |
The only solution is to keep getting more puppies |

Thanks. That's what I was worried about since we free feed him. I think I should cut down on his food a tad daily. |
Wow, he does sound like he's going to be a big boy! |
At almost 6 months, Clyde doesn't even eat the low end of what the bag recommends-- something like 6 to 10 cups. He eats about 4 cups of ProPlan a day supplemented by treats for good deeds-- not excessive treating though, that's my other dog! Needless to say, last week when he went in to get neutered, my little monster weighed 56 pounds. He is very strong, only multiplied by the fact that all that power is in his stocky small body! If he wasn't such a sweetie, I'd worry about having him around people! |
Hi Gail- I have to tell you- Jasper's puppy picture is so adorable. If you have anymore pics of him as he grows-please share them. Thanks! |
You do need to be careful about how much you feed because they can have problems if they frow too fast.
That being said, Carl grew so fast that he was noticeably bigger every week at puppy kindergarten. So much so that the class and instructor thought that I was bringing a different dog everytime! |
I am so glad you posted this topic because I was about to post the same thing. Spike is growing SOOOO quickly, I think he's weighing in around 20 ~ 25 lbs right now at almost 10 weeks old. I also free feed him and keep an eye on the amount he's getting so I didn't think it was too much but I do notice his joints (all of them, not just hips) clicking from rapid growth, which I understand is normal -hopefully he outgrows that without problems!
On another note, I've barely had any time to come online because every waking moment practically is spent at work or with the puppy. He certainly is a handful and a heavy one at that! |
I would like to weigh in free feeding, I have stated that I free feed Roger however I do measure what goes into the bowl and that's it for the day, he just gets to eat when he wants to. So it's sort of free feeding he eats everthing I put in there virtually every day. |
Willowsprite your rope ending was cute and made me think of a joke.
A rope walked into a bar and asked for a drink the bartender said we don't serve ropes here. The rope was very depressed, walked outside tied himself into a knot and beat himself against the sidewalk, got a smile on his face and went back into the bar. The bartender said didn't I tell you we don't serve ropes here. The reply: I'm a fraid Knot. He he he |
That is too funny!
Thanks for the quick laugh! |
This is of interest to me as well, today I took my 10 1/2 week old Sheepie, Max to the vet for his second boosters, he weighed in at 23.2 lbs. He was a little over 16 lbs. about 3 weeks ago. So I'll check back with you in 4 weeks and see what he weighs when he is 14 weeks or so! I do let him free feed, and he seems to eat about 4 times a day. He also gets plenty of outdoor exercise, so I feel that he's doing fine and his vet thinks so too. |

haha...sadly, I don't think our house is big enough for 4 people, 1 cat, and 2 OES |
