What about canned food? Any opinions on that? |

Not for my sheepies........all Purina products give them gas
Purina has many different types food. Read labels. I'd say ask your vet, but mine is one who pushes ProPlan. There's a new dog food coming out in the next few weeks called EVO made by Natura. There is no cereal grains at all!! The food is made from turkey, chicken, herring, bones and all as well as vegetables, fruit and cheese. It would not be for puppies as the protein is way high...42% It will be great for overweight dogs (doggie Atkins?), nursing bitches, dogs in recovery or major working dogs and dogs already on a BARF or raw diet but the owner needs a "take out dinner" for a quick change. My porky-pig dog still has another 15-20 lbs to lose..........maybe this would help us to the finish line. |
Lol. You know what SheepieBoss, you just made me finally put 2 and 2 together. I just thought Clyde was taking after my boyfriend with his evil gas but I'll bet it's the ProPlan! I will say one thing about it though, it's helped him put on plenty of weight (maybe too much at 6 months and over 50 pounds) and brought all of his previously low levels of protein up. I had been using the same brand that he had been being fed before I got him because I didn't want to upset his tummy but the ProPlan has made him much healthier. Food definitely can make a difference. |
I use Nutro Large Breed and have good luck with it. My guys like it. Canned food is an occasional thing at our house but I also use Nutro. |
None of my sheepies have been able to tolerate soy in any form........something I find in many dogs foods, especially Purina products. Yeah, 50 lbs may be a bit high. Time to think about downing the protein content. Excessive growth early one doesn't allow for the different parts to develop in a timely manner.....hence possible structural problems later. Look to the larger breed foods now. These guys continue developing until they are about 14 months. Their height may stop before a year......not always......but their chest broadens and the muscles, ligaments, etc lengthen properly.

We use Nutro Large Breed also with good results.
We give a small amount of cooked meat or chicken mixed in for variety once in a while. With our first sheepdog, found that canned food did not agree with him. There are many dog food options, a quick search of the net can provide dog food comparison charts which are very helpful. Good luck ! |
I can't find anything that will make my girls gain weight. Sky doesn't really need to she is fine, but Dancer is too small IMO, nothing is working with her. I do find she is gaining a little with pro plan, but very slowly. |
For me I say Nutro all the way. When I had my 1st collie he is highly allergic to something in the food i gave him,he lost alot of fur and had hot spots all over his body, being new to owning a dog(this was many yrs ago)I was clueless in what food to use.So I had asked my vet and he said change his food to something that has beeter ingredients.I turned to lamd and rice Nutro for large breeds.Within 2months he was a totally differnt dog.His fur grew,no more hot spots, and his coat was so thick and shinning.Over the yrs i have stayed w/ Nutro lamd and rice and allof my dogs have been healthy, beautiful coats, and just over all not only looking beautiful, but being healthy. My collie now has issues w/ keeping weight on so i add some Iams gravey to his and my other boys, and the weight stays on.So Id have to say yes there is a huge difference in the cheaper brands of dog food virsus the little more pricey foods. You can also add some canned food to your puppers food maybe that would help to add some lbs,I know Nutro carries canned food also. I hope ive helped some what.have fun w/ your new baby!! |
We've been very happy with Nutro- one thing I have always heard is that the off the shelf grocery store brands lead to more waste products ( and we all could do with less of that!) Thsi has something to do with their content and the amount of 'filler' used.
One thing that really bothered me when we were looking for a food for Chelase, was the lack of ingredients on some of the packages. Nutro listed all of the ingredients just like human food. I'm not sure what all of the stuff does, but just like with my 10 year old I like to know if we are eating junk or healthy stuff. It made me wonder why some brands did not list ingredients and others did. Up. |
yes you are right a better food for our buddies do make smaller poopies ,just for the fact that their bodies are using the good stuff, and the stuff that is a filler or preservitive goes out the other end so "usually" w/ a better food comes smaller poops |
I think im leaning towards nutro,
the clerk at the pet store gave me some samples of Solid Gold Hundchen Flocken dog foods and i did pick up a back of their treats Wondering if anyone has tried this brand |
There was something in Natural Health about Solid Gold: their dried food has no preservatives or common allergans, but does contain healthful flaxseed oil and green tea. I add flax or flaxseed oil to food and homemade treats. |
Hundchen Flocken is supposed to be one of the best. My sister had her dog on it. She had major digestive problems and the Hundchen Flocken is the only food that worked for her.
Pepsi & Harley both have sensitive tummys. I put them on PetSmart's own Premium Food.. Authority New Zealand Lamb and Rice. Guaranteed to reduce dog waste. It has!!! Smaller, More Solid easy to clean up. Everything gives Pepsi gas except this food. One treat...and he has gas....BAD!! Poor guy can't even have a milkbone He does seem to love his food though |
How about Timberwolf Organics? Does anybody know anything about this brand? I am switching Bubba over from Eukanuba and he seems to like it. I wasn't sure about a raw diet for him as I have a lot to learn about BARF still.

Both my girls are on Natural Balance (regular and low cal for Maggie) and they seem to do fine on it. I occasionaly use their canned products as well. A holistic vet I saw when one of mine was undergoing chemo said that a 'by product' can be just about anything taken out of a chicke, cow or otherwise, including cancerous growths
She recommended to lokk for products that did not list by-products in the ingredients. |
Blue Star is doing very well so far on Large Breed puppy formula by Eagle. I am very pleased with her skin and coat with this food. I hadn't heard of it before I changed jobs and they sold it there. They also sell the Solid Gold (hunden Flocken sp?). I have used the Solid Gold in the past and had good results from that as well.

Brands like Innova/California Natural, Bench & Field, Karma, Pinnacle, Wellness...they're all very good. Great ingredients. |
I was feeling bad about feeding Duncan dog food that I buy off the shelf at the grocery store, but I see that 30% of the pollers picked Purina dog food as their choice, so I guess it's okay. Is there really a big difference in the more expensive food you get at the pet stores?? How about some opinions on this? Thanks.
What about canned food? Any opinions on that? With dog foods off the shelf they are often cheaper as they do not contain any real ingredients. Some times "mystery" meats are added. Or meat by products which can be any thing...and by that I mean "any thing" read these if you get a chance http://www.api4animals.org/79.htm http://www.canine-epilepsy-guardian-ang ... dients.htm Some of my biggest concerns when buying dog food is whole food products like Chicken, Beef...no by products. Real food listed on the package with at least 2 protein sources listed first...sorry science diet you don't make the list I also am a big fan of organic foods, food items raised without the use of pesticides, animals raised without antibiotics, quick growth formula's, herbavoires being fed other meat sources. I look for meadow raised, free range animals fed natural ingredients. I also look for foods which do not use preservatives to perserve their foods...some kibbles vacuum seal thier foods for freshness or use natural vitamin E. I Also rotate my dogs food every 3-4 months. Some times even the best quality food may have too much or too little of one nutrient. So, by switching you are keeping your pet from getting an excess or not enough...switch gradually. I also feed raw organic meats and veggies, yogurt(organic), organic ground flax seed, hemp oil, whole fresh free range eggs...etc. Variety is the spice of life. |

What about canned food? Any opinions on that? I just wanted to add that the poll is not specific. There are many types of food from each of these brand names, on all ends of the scale. Purina for instance makes some of the worst quality foods available, like Dog Chow, Beneful etc, and some at the middle scale, like Purina One, and some at the higher end scale, like Pro Plan. None of these are what I would call a super premium food though. |
Also, I was feeding Purina, but have switched to Wellness.... |
