He doesn't get smelly, but I don't want to dry his skin out.. thanks Lisa and Frankie |

I bathe them when mine get dirty. After realizing every dog is different, I no longer listen to actual numbers b/c they don't make sense when most of us on here don't have show dogs. If your dog goes out a lot, gets muddy, and starts to get a film on them... I wash them. The thought of living with a dog that is dirty just because I shouldn't wash them more than the recommended 2-4 times a year is crazy to me. I wash one of my dogs ever 2 wks, the other ever 4 ...and they have 0 issues with dry skin, and they unquestionably needed a bath. Okay maybe only one of them "unquestionably" needed one, but the dog who goes every 4 wks gets one b/c I just like her smelling good and clean. She doesn't always NEED one. I just use conditioner and rinse out thoroughly. Some people have dogs that only get 1-2 baths a year b/c that's when they start getting filthy. |
I bath my girls every one to two weeks. They have not had dry skin problems either. |
I bathe my girls every 7 - 10 adays, thats abou as long as they can go without getting dirty, and I can't stand a dirty dog. I do a spot cleaning much more often. Our yard at the new house is just soaking wet and muddy ALL the time. And Luna hes begun digging and eating it. So every couple of days I end up washing paws and faces. If I can, I just do a rinse for those. But sometimes they require shampoo.
ALSO; pick your dog shampoo carefully. Recently I have been taking them to a do-it-yourself washing place. They have so many different shampoos to try, that I haven't been bringing my own, which I carefully researched and chose so that it could be used frequently without damage to the fur or skin. Just this last time I noticed that Tonks and Luna's fur feels very dried out; not something we've experienced before. So I'm going back to using just my Chris Christiansen Day-to-Day shampoo, conditioner, protein rinse and dematting spray. |
.I have been bathing Pearl every 2 weeks for the past 13 years!!!!! And now, since Heart is in the Therapy program, she will be bathed every 2 weeks as well..I have never had a problem with dry skin either... |
When Bert was 8 months we bathed him a bunch. Every week or more because he would get into something. Now he gets a bath about every 3 weeks. |

I agree - the brand/type of conditioner makes a HUGE difference! I am partial to Crazy Dog Baby Dog Shampoo. You can get a gallon of it for about $20 from jefferspet.com & it dilutes somewhere around 1:16. So, A LOT cheaper for those of us with big pups or mult. pups. I use a generic conditioner but am looking for a better one as Sid's coat is a bit more maintainance than the GSDs and pugs. Go figure! lol |
i bath billy every 2 weeks some times every week depending on the weather and how muddy he gets. i am so glad i am not the only one.
i love him all fluffy and white. not too keen on the mud up to the belly look! |
GREAT!!!!!!!
I just wantedto make sure. I have a old book on the oes and I believe I read somewhere in it too bathe 2x a year. Yes 2 x a year. But it was ok to wash the face and rear end more often. Spot cleaning I think it said. Thanks for all the good information |
i know alot of people that do only clean their dogs a couple of times a year. And I think if you have one indoor dog that would be fine. But my two constantly wrestle outside and roll in all sorts of stuff. Plus I can't stand the smell of dirty dog. |

My non-show dog only gets 2 baths a year unless he really gets into something. My show dog is bathed about once every 10 days but if I wasn't growing his coat out and intending to show him as a special, he'd be on 2 baths a year, too. Regular brushing goes a long way on keeping the coat pretty clean. |
My dog gets bathed every 2 weeks but am going to bathe him every week during rainy season. My Bichon, who also has hair and not fur used to get bathed every week and now goes every 2 weeks...he is 12 years old and never had a problem. Lucky is 8 months old and so far has no problem either..in fact he LOVES getting all clean!! |
really it depends on the dog. Marley (if we weren't showing) would only get a full bath every three months or so. Morgan sometimes needs on every two weekes - he is a pig pen and has a softer coat.
Faces adn whites get washed more often. Also when they were younger - before their adult coats came in - they both got bathed more regularly. Since it takes me about 6-8 houirs to fully bath and groom an in coat dog I can't imagine doing it every two weeks. |
Lola gets a bath when she starts to be the wrong color. That is usually every week or so. She and Lily like to wrestle in the back yard. |
It really depends on the season with my two. If it's April (where it rains daily and they find every muddy puddle) they will be bathed nearly daily. Otherwise, I go by touch and sight. Wendel will develop a film on his coat as he gets dirty, also their whites get muted.
This thread also brought a question to mind... to those who have cats, how often do you bathe them? Josh's father calls me a nut because I bathe my cats. I bathe mine every 3 months, or when you can pet them and their fur sticks up. |
^^^
1-2 times a year ...and I shave them every 8 wks or so. |
Jackson only gets bathed after a camping trip and maybe 1-2 other times per year. I just had to give her a bath last week because I noticed that when I patted her butt dust flew up! First time I ever had a dusty doggy.....I'm guessing it was because we heat the house with wood and therefore everything in the home gets dusty as fast as I can clean it. Never thought about Jack falling victim to this though.... |
I bath mine about once a month because she is not a "girlie" girl and LOVES to run through every mud hole she can find. My groomer once told me the secret to prevent them from the "itchy, dry skin" is to make sure you rinse them VERY WELL of the shampoo so I usually rinse Hannah a good solid 5 minutes after I get the suds off her and then I apply a good conditioner and rinse well again. Then the blow dryer comes out and she gets all excited. That dog will lay forever to get blow dried and brushed. |

Doh! How did you manage that. Tiggy runs a mile. She doesnt like a bath but she positively hates the blow dryer. |
Thats funny
Frankie stands by the bathroom door when I'm drying my hair in the morning and wants to be blown. He loves it. He throws his head back and lets me dry his chin and neck. He smiles Lisa and Frankie |
I wish!!!!! |
If anyone has a blaster dryer they don't want I would gladly take it!! Ru gets a bath every 8-10 weeks, mainly because the whole process takes me an entire day. I swear, he has the thickest coat I've ever seen on a sheepie. People who show have told me they couldn't cope with it So using my hair dryer to dry him takes 2 hours. That alone puts me off bathing him any more frequently. He gets his feet, inside back legs, under belly, rear end & beard washed 2, maybe 3 times a week. I'm still using human shampoo because it smells so nice, but will switch to proper doggy shampoo soon. |
Quote: How did you manage that I got really lucky because when she was a "baby" she would squeel and cry when I tried to blow dry her. My husband would sit in a chair and blow dry our German Shep. and the sheepie decided she wanted in on the action. Now she'll lay for as long as you'll dry her. She'll even "roll over" to get the other side |

What do you use to spot clean the muzzle and beard for a puppy? I have baby wipes that I use on our Mastiff when she gets a little dirty, but they won't whiten. Is that a problem? |
not if you don't mind a little yellow - which you are most likely going to have to learn to live with anyway. |
I must admit with the weather that we have had lately (rain, flooding, snow, ice, minus 20 degree temperatures, and more rain) I have been really, really struggling to keep him semi-respectable - even for a few days!
Normally I bath him once a week (Sunday) - he's very good and just stands there in the bath whilst he gets soaped up and rinsed down with a shower head. He is also very good when he gets dried with the hair dryer. I think it's because he has done it since he was small (was he ever small?). I always groom him before his bath to get any tatts out before the water makes them worse. It is hard work. I can't imagine how any working dogs manage! Nik |
On a daily basis beard has to be rinsed or shampoo. To avoid to have his whole front wet when doing the beard, cut a hole in an old shower curtain, enough to get over his head. Trim it so it covers his front.
Much less to dry this way. Erik |

Much less to dry this way. Erik That's a good idea. The visual is pretty funny though. |
I taught Chewie to stand at the edge of the tub and lean his head over. Then I wet the face w/ a few cups of water (I have old plastic tumblers in the tub for dogs and grandkids), shampoo, rinse and blot dry w/ a hand towel. Then we play a little tug w/ the towel, he shakes and it's done. Takes about 3 minutes.
We do it everytime before we go anywhere, so, he loves it! My other dogs offer the same behavior in hopes it will let them come with too! |
Dawn that is cool.
I dont have a tub, Tiggy gets bathed in the double shower, which means I get bathed too. But I'm thinking I can train her to do that with a reasonable sized tub of water. So far I've just used the waterless shampoo but it doesnt work as well as a proper wet and rinse bath. |
