Measuring for Curtains

I know I read it somewhere but I'm sure someone can pull it right out of their heads.

Actually its for valances. Is it two times or three times the size of the window. In the dining area its three separate windows side by side...does that make sense? Anyway it measures 100inches.

The valances I ordered are 56in long each and I ordered 4 for a total of 224 inches. Is that long enough?

I think if depends on how full you want the look. I normally go 4x
We had some leveling issues so even if it's the same size window, measure them all. They're not always created equal! Thankfully we had someone do it for us because we would have had a disaster.
I typically go 3-4 for a valance and 2-3 for curtains.
Maybe it's an Eastern thing, but 4x sounds way too excessive. Then again I'm not one for valences. 2 1/2 is my max.
WHen I worked in a fabric store years ago the rule was either 1.5 or 2 times the width - depending on both the fullness desired and the weight of the fabric. Thinner fabric can be wider because it doesn't have heft to give it fullness. I would think anything over 2.5 would be way too full and not have any effective drape to it.
I make my own, and I usually double the actual width.
