She's just miserable, we don't put her in her kennel much when we're home, and my husband has a week off, and I'm a stay at home mom. Even worse, when we let her out for potty and food/water breaks, she just goes berserk, which is the opposite of what the bed rest is supposed to be doing. Anyone had to "restrict" their dog before? Any suggestions on how to keep her sane? (she refuses to play with toys or chewies while in her kennel, won't even eat treats in it). And once she's ok to be out of the kennel, she can't be exercised for a week, so how do we burn some energy off without aggravating her paw? |

Awww poor Sunny! Does she have to be in a kennel or could she be tethered to something immobile (the couch?) instead? I ask because my Maggie often won't eat treats in the crate but she will when she is tethered. I have eye bolts in my walls so I can tether them when needed (only supervised, of course).
People always recommend mental games to tire dogs out. Maybe this is when you could try training some cute tricks like give paw, cover the nose, etc. |
When Sam had his hip surgery we confined him to a room adjoinging the kitchen and barricaded him him. To keep him quiet and out of mischief while we were away, we put his giant wire crate in there. Between the crate and pushed aside furniture he had little moving about area. So he was forced to remain still be we could see him and talk with him.........and go around the barriers to sit with him.
It's hard for an active dog, but their healing is important. Use the time for grooming and rubbies. You'll get nothing else done, so don't fight it. |
Mental games are great!!!! There are a couple of websites that give some fun tests ....Good Luck!!! |
