She was feeling better the next day, but I still wanted to take her in to the vet hospital. The vet did an extensive exam of her hip, knee and ankle, and sure enough, they're all fine. So then she looked at her paw, and said "yup, it's her toes" So, Sunny has sprained toes Treatment? Restriction for 3 days (as in, keep her in her cage), because she's started using the leg again, and thus will re-injure it in no time. And no exercise for a week- no laser pointer in the park, no walks, no jaunts to the mailbox, nothing for a week. Sigh. Try keeping an almost 2 year old OES on bedrest? She's already going crazy. We kept her in her cage until 11:00 am today (not including potty and food breaks of course), and when we let her out, she was already going stir crazy. We tried to just keep her laying/sitting on her bed, but she was constantly getting up and down. And she not only sneaks off it, she bolts off the bed and frolics around- limping. So, I guess we do have to do the cage all day It's so sad, I can't imagine how it looked/sounded when she did it, she must have gone wild with yelping I feel so bad for her, and am constantly hugging her, she's going to think she's Alpha! If anyone has any tricks for keeping her sane this week, I'm open to suggestions! |

find a good yummy dog bone and let her chew on that. The usually keeps them quiet for a little while. After that...hmmmm |
No good suggestions except to wonder why the need to keep off of a sprain. Seems to me it would heal on its own even with use, butwhadoIknowI'mnotavet? |
Do you have any hydrotherapy places nearby? A few swimming sessions would wear her out nicely |

That's a great idea, but I don't know of any indoor facilities that take dogs, and everything outdoor is under ice here now. Ron, I know what you mean, I sort of agree. I guess the vet figured that if it was feeling better but not totally healed, she might go too hard, even in the house. Which she sort of has already, oops. I think she's feeling better and better though, so that's good. Tomorrow we let her have the run of the house again, so that's good too. |
Sprains/strains can actually be harder to heal and take longer to heal than a broken bone. The last thing you want is for it to turn into a chronic issue.
See if your vet can recommend a rehab vet clinic that might have a water treadmill or pool. We have a specialty vet group here (internal medicine, surgery, dermatology and opthamology) that includes rehab. They have a certified animal physical therapist (there's only one school in the US). |
Sometimes keeping them in their crate for that long makes them even crazier when they get let out. Can you perhaps keep him confined by baby gates in the kitchen area so he can still walk around and be with you but not too large an area to run?
We had to keep our girl "rested" for over 6 weeks for a pulled muscle. The large size bully stix helped... |
poor sunny. it is difficult to keep them still. i know! |
