How do you say the next year of 2010? Two thousand ten OR Twenty ten ?? All the rest of the years we said it the latter way - 1999 was nineteen ninety-nine. Then at 2000, it switched to two thousand, 2001= two thousand one, etc. At some point I anticipate it swtching back - will this be the year??? (See, I told you my brain gets full of odd thoughts, clogging up the way for other stuff! ) What do YOU think? |

twenty ten |
Both! |
Right now I'm saying 2 thousand, but I'm sure when it becomes a normal thing I say... it'll become twenty |

LOL ...so true. I can't tell you how many times I wrote a check this year and wrote 2008 |

Check?? hmm I seem to remember those |
Good question.......
What was said a century ago...nineteen oh nine or nineteen hundred nine? Is the extra syllable that difficult so we switched to two thousand? Currently I find myself saying it both ways: twenty ten and two thousand ten. Like Ron, I just hope I remember to change to the new date when addressing letters and writing checks. One suggestion is to go ahead and write the correct year on the checks...about a month's worth...and then when they are used up, you'll have the new date firmly in your mind. Not me, not long ago I dated a check 1996 It must have been a good year........... |
I'm going to say "Two-thousand ten". But I also say "September eleventh" not "Nine-eleven". |
I work in an elementary school.
It's two thousand ten. We have to use the correct place names. :p |

Twenty ten. Twenty eleven sounds just wrong though. Greg says that doesn't matter, as the world will end before then anyway |

I thought we had until 2012?? I say two thousand ten. I can anticipate saying it this way until we hit the next century, when the 'one' doesn't roll off the tongue as well, 2120 (twenty one twenty is easier to say than two thousand one hundred twenty). I'll be super old then, so who knows what I'll say |

That depends which nut you believe... these guys reckon it's sooner than 2012. |

I can't remember that far back, but knowing my principal, we probably did say one thousand, nine hundred, whatever. Every moment is a teaching moment. And our kids do excel on standardized tests. Note that I don't necessarily agree with it, but I do understand that it can be confusing for second graders learning their number positions and math facts. |
I say 2010 as two thousand and ten and 2011 as two thousand and eleven but then I also pronounce 2012 as twenty twelve... |
I've skipped the ''20" part all together and just said oh-nine (09) and now I find my self saying oh-ten. But, I think I'll end up using twenty-ten most often. |

I guess technically there's a '0' in front of the 10, so you're good |
The National Association for Good Grammar made the decision for us:
