Kristine was right...PIRATE IS FAT! He weighed in at 98.2 pounds! He will be going to Weight Watchers with me! The vet said he's not obese, just chubby. She wants him down to 90 pounds. He will be 6 this year, so we have to be careful. Liz, however is not chubby. Vet says at 60 pounds, she is just right! She can feel Liz's ribs nicely. As for the fleas....they apparently weren't as bad as they seemed. However, the dogs have a sensitivity to the critter, and have scratched themselves into skin infections. They (and Keira) were given antibiotics, antihistimines, switched to Sentry heartworm (with critter fighter) and more front line. Pirate's dosage of Frontline is for big and tall boys. The vet also sent home Frontline for the cats. A week later, they all seem very improved, but are still scratching, but not nearly as much. We left the vet $1570 lighter, but with happier dogs and cats. |

Yikes!!!!! But I would respectfully disagree with your vet re Lizzie. As a teeny girl with not a lot of bone she can easily afford to lose a couple of pounds. (Don't tell her I told you that )She's not critical by any means, so if you and your vet are happy with her weight, so be it. But if you ever want to do anything athletic with her, that's a different story. She's carrying too much fluffiness for her frame. Most pet vets tend to see mostly pet dogs who tend to be overly fluffy and by those standards I'm sure she feels fine. Long term for her joints slimmer is better. Just keep an eye on her. She is fluffiness prone. She's far from alone. I have to watch my girls as well. Anyway, the bigger question is why hasn't someone come up with a "weight-watchers" equivalent for dogs? Maybe time for a career change? Although when my boss' little mix was declared overweight, vet set a target amount to lose, and she actually has weekly weigh-ins, which I've never heard of before. Kind of cool. Glad the itching is subsiding. That must have driven you all nuts. Been wondering where you were!!!! How are you doing? Kristine |

My vet LOVES me! I sort think she over medicated us...not with too much dosage, but too many pills. She also gave us spray stuff, that we still haven't used..in fact, she gave us 2 bottles of it. |
oh honey - she didn't GIVE you anything |

Holy Merry Christmas! Worth every penny if they're healthy and happy, though. |
$1570 for WHAT???????? |
Exactly my thought Ron! Unless they walked out with a year's worth of Frontline, etc. freshly scraped teeth for all and blood work for all.....
Those dog meds for flea allergies are steep!! |
WOW!!!! |

Ron you sound like Tony...sooooooo Ok...here goes the inventory... 1 years worth of Sentry Heart worm - for 3 dogs plus the blood test to check to make sure they are free of heartworms. 7 months worth of front line - for 3 dogs and 2 cats 500 - 50 mg Hydroxyzine Pamoate capsules (and I understand...I, too, can take this if I get stressed!) 4 weeks worth of 500 mg Cephalexin caplets for 3 dogs. 2 rabies shots and registration kennel cough stuff for 2 dogs and whatever else they get on their annual checkups.. Oh and 3 poop exams. And I stole the pen I wrote my check with A lot of drugs...and a lot of money....as I said I went home and had to lay down. But, as Tony always reminds me, I'm a good doggie mommy. |
Oh yea....sorry...and two bottle of PHAMASEB tropical spray...of which we haven't used any yet... |
Well, first of all let me say.... Pirate is nothing BUT, perfect!
Anyway, Deb your flea problem probably came from just using Sentinel. It is basically a "birth control" for fleas. It only keeps them from reproducing... Your vet should have told you if you are going to use Frontline to step back to Interceptor(same dewormer and heartworm prevention) Half the price... Sorry, the vet raked you!!! I can not even imagine how much you paid for the Cephelexin Next time it is needed ask for a script, you can get it so much cheaper at a human pharmacy. Trust me, I check my prices and I work for a vet...still cheaper at Costco or such!! Let's chat about cutting cost, that is way crazy! Love ya lady! |
Holy canoles that's alotta dough!
BTW, I buy the heart worm and flea meds online...it's literally 1/2 what my vet charges. Search Amazon for some very good prices. I just tell the vet the truth - sorry, I have to save the $$ where I can! We also do our own vaccinations - we can purchase them and get the registration though a local serum/veterinary supply company to the tune of about $10/dog. Our annual check up at the vet runs about $75/dog! OY VAY I'd stroke out with that kind of bill for a check up! (Don't feel bad about Pirate's weight - my piggy girl Lacy is right there with him and she's 6 too!) |
####!!!! what a vet bill
I can see why your vet LOVES you, have they named a wing in the building "debcram" |
