St. Louis Rehab is one of the best in the midwest...cutting edge especially for head trauma. Christopher Reeves would receive alot of his therapy there and when he died, Dana attended the dedication. **I digress...sorry** I put Millie's harness on her...an antique from 1992..((Pearl wore it her whole career......)) She tried is on when she was 4 months old...and back then it was my hope she would GROW into it....... AND SHE DID!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! She was GREAT!!!! ...me,,, being a very bad mom, I never took her on an elevator before this (which I was required to do).. .....so I didn't know what the heck would happen when the room began moving..well she did very good. The other dogs seemed to calm her since they were used to it. Visiting in the evening, there is alot of cleaning going on..she did NOT shy away when the janitor passed with the big water bucket and the big mop...she did NOT shy away when the dinner trays were being wheeled by her...or the carts...She did not seem to mind the 'smells' in certain rooms... she put her head on the beds when I directed her to, .she rose to a bed, and to a chair...she waited to be petted by a women who had part of her skull removed due to brain swelling..she looked everyone in the eye as they commented on how pretty and fluffy she was..she was patient when a women who just had a stroke, began petting her with a very shaky, uncontrolled hand with tears in her eyes ((her husband told me she really missed her maltese)). and I was very happy and proud!!!! There were many, many staff, visitors and clients who remarked..."""that is the most beautiful dog I ever saw!!!"" A couple asked if she was a show dog!!! NOOOooo but her brother and sister are!!!!!! The other dogs, who have been going for over a year, were much more 'wild' and misbehaving..but not our Heart..she just did what she always does...watch and take everything in...she was amazing!!!!! Now, my Heart is sleeping..a very very tired puppy....but I really think she knows what a fantastic job she did tonight...and will continue to do for the next 10 years!!!! (sorry this is so long...I just wanted to share this very special memory with my forum friends))) |

THAT IS SO AWESOME!. Working in a hospital, I can imagine the joy you brought to the patients that day! |
what an amazing team you and Heart make....reading about your visit brought tears to my eyes....it's a truly wonderful gift that shows just how special you and Heart (also Millie and Pearl too) are! |
awwww heart you are such a good girl and beautiful too. Guinness sends a big sheepie hug (and so does his momma) Val you did good too |
Sounds like you 2 had a wonderful 1st visit!
Keep up the good work. I'm sure Heart just made the patients and families so happy! |
No need to apologize for being long - what a wonderful story. Having been a victim of a head trauma myself I found it very touching. |
Heart, you are such a beautiful and smart girl with the best mommie too.
That must be a magic harness that Pearl and Millie proudly wore. Keep up the family tradition. |
Awww, that's so great. |
Good job Heart!! I'm very proud of you. It is amazing to me to see an OES "work a room" full of patients. Somehow sensing who needs them most, manuevering themselves to be in the best position to be petted and then patiently waiting while being petted. Bravo Heart and you too Val, for being consistent in therapy work. |
I never had any doubts about my little snapping turtle.
What a sweetie pie. |
Great job, Heart and Val!!!
Can you put some sparkly stuff on that harness to bring it up to Heart's standards??? |
