This is from a guy who hates shopping and just recently has more than two pairs of pants. He now has, count them, 3 pairs of Carhartt pants , and 2 other pairs of pants. Now granted, he is still going to spend all his time thinking that he only has two pairs I swear I lost 2 hours of my life in at the farm store with him as he agonized over the price of those Danner boots. His other pair of shoes were giving him nasty stinky feet problems. So he needed a nice pair that weren't on the way to giving him a foot fungas (and it appealed to his frugal side as you can send them back to the store to get fixed). I think he hopes to have these shoes for the rest of his life. He is just now looking at a new pair of shoes (UGG) that I wish he would buy as he whines the whole time he has to actually shop. He needs a pair of slippers (since our house is so freezing) but his flip flops broke so he needs a new pair of causal shoes too. But he doesn't want two new pairs. I told him this pair http://www.uggaustralia.com/gb/ProductD ... =Rockville would do as both. Then I told him they were very manly shoes like a mix between motorcycle, Firefly (TV show), and just plain sex in a boot. Suddenly his interest peeked. He still hasn't boughten them and just goes clomping around in his one pair of boots. He keeps looking at them though So how much does your average everyday wear cost all added up? That is not counting jewelry, just clothes. I was very surprised at how much Lee's fancy working mans clothes added up too. |
|
I love that you mentioned Firefly; they are very "Mal". |
Ooh I love those Rockville boots. Greg wouldn't be seen dead in them though.
I think an average outfit for me adds up to about £90 ($148) including shoes & coat, I've been on a tight budget the last 3 years so most of my stuff is from discount clothing stores. Even so, I'm surprised how much it is once you add everything in like underwear, coat & shoes. I've heard clothes are much cheaper in the US (along with everything else I think?!) I guess Greg's would come to £110 ($181) without his leather jacket, you need to pay more for men's clothes here because the discount stores only seem to stock clothes for men with short arms & short torso! |
I hate shopping and am offended at spending a lot of money for an item of clothing that was made on the cheap and dies after a few washes. So I hang on to favorites forever and hand wash some stuff to make it last.
So I think a day to day outfit probably cost me $150 max. Wayne on the other hand is worse. He is a very impatient shopper and goes mega cheap. I dont shop with him so I dont know but he is probably only wearing about $80 worth of clothes. Mind you he isnt a fashion plate. |
Well... I'm always wearing an Ann Taylor/Calvin Klein/NY&Co t-shirt which was probably 19-24 bucks, and I'd be lying to those who have seen my pic if I said I was in something other than sweatpants during the day. Those are usually 29-35 bucks from american eagle unless I have my nike/athleta ones on that are both around $60. I wear flip flops outside that have been worn so many years that I might as well not give a price to them. they're worth $0 now
Now if I'm actually going out somewhere other than to run errands, my outfit is still from the same places but probably double in price. ...and the pants are probably not something that's been around since college |
I am usually a very casual dresser.
Example - the outfit I wore yesterday out shopping: Pink breast cancer t-shirt bought as a fundraiser for my basset friend Lisa going through her 2nd round of Breast CA treatment - $15 white long sleeve t-shirt under it - very old, but still white thanks to my love of bleach! - about $12 new My favorite LEI jeans - $20 on sale new tennis shoes -$55 (just bought them Thursday night - and 1st new pair in YEARS) although I have a shoe addiction..... Basset ankle socks - $5 undies/bra - old ones, but still in good shape! jacket - free from the Paw (I am walking advertising ) |
I forgot about underwear and bras!! My daily wear ain't anything to write home about, and I SLEEP in what I wear for the day, BUT I do spend $$$ on my bras and panties. I mean, I've been pregnant pretty much since I started posting here, so I'm sure that's not surprising. |
Cheap, cheap, cheap..except for bras and shoes. Support badly needed in both locations. Even my slippers will run $$$. |
I'm at home all the time so I have day indoor wear which is basically nightwear, so 2 sets of nightwear going at a time. I pull on jeans & a coat to take Ru out or do the shopping but I'm at home the rest of the time dressed like a slob for under £15 ($25) |
Hmm, can we put this in the member's only section so my husband doesn't see it, lol...
Let's see... Today's outfit: Turtleneck: $50ish Pants: $50ish Shoes: $70ish Undergarments: maybe $50 total--super old, so who knows! Good thing I'm not wearing my 'good' jeans. It'd be embarassing to say how much $$ I spend on jeans. |
I don't like garbage. I don't like the way cheap stuff looks or feels. It's one thing to buy staples like t-shirts and camis at a discount but, otherwise, cheap clothes look cheap. I'm not suggesting you have to spend a fortune but you don't have to stoop to the level of Wal-Mart or K-Mart when there are so many stores out there offering pretty decent stuff for reasonable prices. You can even go pretty far at Target. Target now offers capsule collections by big name designers for limited runs so you can get high fashion stuff at really good prices. It's made pretty well, too.
But, I also LOVE clothes. Everything about them. I'd be lying if I said I didn't buy an article of clothing or shoes, gulp, every day. My outfit cost today is really being driven up by the kick ass boots that I'm wearing so I'm not even going to share since it makes it sound crazy. |
It isn't cost per outfit - its cost per wearing
A former boss with a penchant for high end clothes told me that. SHe was right. But I still can't pay full price for anything - I mean most stores never expect anyone to anyway and put things directly "on Sale" anyway. Right now - shoes (on clearance at Macys') for $24.15 (originally $60 Naturalizers) pants - (on sale at Kohl's over a year ago) propbably around $20 - and worn almost weekly shirt - long sleeved T on sale at Penneys - less than $20 sweater - Bought so long ago I forget - but probably less than $50 Undergarments - I don't even want to talk about it - I just bought two bras this morning on my way to work (no crowds) and I can't believe how expensive these things are!! |
kerry wrote: It isn't cost per outfit - its cost per wearing
LOL. What's the difference? People wear stuff more than once? |
Quote: stoop to the level of Wal-Mart or K-Mart
Ah, reason for my back ache! |
I'm with Mrs. J; I often wear my Pajams all day. If I DO get "dressed", I wear part of my "day clothes" to bed again that night; usually the shirt. I work form home, so like to be comfy.
Its almost noon now, and I'm still wearing what I slept in. I'll get dressed soon though; I have a doctors appointment this afternoon. Right now I'm wearing: Shearling slippers. I've had them 3 years, wear them all day, every day, and they are almost done. I think I spent $100 for them. It doesn't help that Luna likes these alot, and carries them around the house with her when I'm not wearing them. Flannel pajama pants from Victoria's secret. I don't know HOW its possible, but i got these 15 years ago. I was a small then, and really am not now, but they still fit. They are just beginning to be thread bare in some spots and are probably due to be replaced. I think back then I spent $35 on them. I recall that at the time, they were indulgent. Waffle weave thermal style shirt from Target: $10. Got this last year and I don't expect it to last more than this year and maybe next, if I'm lucky. And I probably about about $30 of underwear on. So all together, I'm wearing $175 in clothes. I'll check it again when I actually "get dressed". |
LOL - guilty too. Its my day off, and I rarely get "real" dressed until I need to leave the house.
I'm in flannel PJ pants from Kohls, on sale; a souvenier T-shirt from Maine (but it matches!), the basset anklets (I sleep in socks, my feet are always frozen) and my old crocs. |
I rarely buy full price, but all good stuff....but off of the sale rack...so it depends...do i count the full price or what i actually paid...
my best buy so far this year was a DKNY white rain coat...full price $345.00 got it at Lohemans for $16.00....yes, i said $16.00 SCORE! |

. (both of you ) |

I started wearing designer jeans maybe 5 years ago and I cannot go back. I do get several years out of each pair though! I balance this out by always buying cheap shoes since I don't wear leather. Today I'm at about $250, but I get a lot of wear out of my stuff. |

Depending on whether its an artwork making day, or selling day, it varies wildly ...
On an average day in the studio, Im in old worn out jeans (levies mostly: 50-70 $ when new) and a couple of layers of pre-stained shirts (older versions of the hand dyed/printed t-shirts that I get from other artists...usually by barter...retail price maybe $30-40 each) and a pair of crocs. Yesterday at an art fair it was about $400 worth of handmade/dyed/painted silk from a fabulous local artist who thankfully also like my artwork! Yeah for the barter system!!! |
I just did a quick add in my head. The outfit I have on today is about $450 ish --- but-- that includes the boots. Around $250 with unner- wares and bra ( I need steel belted, so that drives up the cost to restrain the pups) minus the boots. Pants were $100-- but I have worn them for three seasons now, and they still look new.
I have TONS of sweats, t-shirts etc that look like I pulled them out of the garbage-- and do wear those at home. If they are comfy and clean I don't care. For errands I bring out the jeans and sweaters- blazer kind of look, and work is typically skirts or pants. Mostly boots int he winter-- or tights with a jumper-- something like that. Funny this thread came up today-- I spent the entire day yesterday cleaning and bagging for Goodwill. Some stuff still had tags on it John about had a fit. I am an impulse buyer at times, and I don't hardly return. Bad Lori... Bad bad Lori. Gives me some nice things to take to those less fortunate though. And that is the spin I used for John.... |

No! and the mailman came to the door with a package and I made Todd answer the door - and that was mainly because I haven't checked my hair in a mirror yet today!!! |

I had tons of friends who went for the buy the most you can for X amount of money and they had to buy new versions of the things every year b/c they'd fall apart. I bought fewer, but nicer, things and still have them. |
I'm wiht you guys on the "liking nice stuff". But I'm over weight and have been for a while, and I refuse to spend alot of money on stuff I won't be able to wear when I get back to a "normal" weight.
That being said? 2pm and i'm finally out of the shower and "dressed". Shirt: $10 from Target Pants: $110 gorgeous cordoroys. Somehow they always look like new, and fit like I'm not the size I am. TOTALLY worth the price I paid, which included free alterations. Shoes: $85 on sale on Zappos. Super comfy, but weatherproof so I can walk the dogs in them. Undergarments and Socks: $40 ...and when I leave I'm going to top it all off with a pretty woven scarf I got in Paris; probably another $75. So total outfit cost is $320 |

I admit it and you can see from my pics, I am a bum and don't mind saying so! |

So I buy what I like or don't buy it at all. My husband on the other hand is STARTING to understand since he'll buy the cheapest hose or gardening tool to save a buck THEN hate using it and complains about it falling apart!!! |

I don't want to look at the same stuff for years. The sofa we have now is the longest I've ever held onto anything but I'd just as soon get new tables, entertainment center, dining set every few years. Furniture is never something I'd buy to last since I don't want it to! |
Not quite sure! However I did recently find an online store called Metrostyle that has a significant # of items on clearance. Last month I found a coupon code that gave $15 off a $15 or more purchase. I was able to use it 5 times! So, with shipping involved (7.99) I would pay a total of about $10 for two items (bought pants, shirts, a med. weight jacket & a scarf). Not bad!!! lol
I would much rather spend money on my son or the dogs than on myself. Until recently I worked in scientific research so I was able to get away with more casual, sometimes experiment stained clothes. It would be nice to look good, but I can't wrap my head around the price of clothes! Esp. as they are covered in slobber, hair and various toddler additions before I even get out of the house! |
I'm such a bargin shopper... I always head to the back of the store where the 50 to 75% off racks are located. I would say today I'm wearing a pair of shoes bought on sale for less than 15 bucks, slacks from G&K that were on sale and I paid 5 bucks (yes, huge sale) and the blouse I'm wearing is a top I bought at Ross for probably 15 bucks or less and to top it off I'm wearing a beautiful hand knit sweater that I finished earlier this year. My husband and I get our hair cut from the same lady and she charges me $35 for the two cuts. I'm well put together for the office and no one would know that I spent less than 40 bucks for what I wore to work. I have brown leather shoes on with a 1" stack heel, dark brown slacks that fit me perfectly, a paisly printed microfiber top with browns, blacks, golds and dark beige in the print. |
Wow, "Darth Snuggle" has seen Firefly. I'm impressed!
I'm still debating the Ugg boots because I'm afraid they are too fashion'y for me. Carhart is really my element. Durable, functional cloths that can take a little abuse unlike most of the normal department store brands. My first pair of Carhart jeans is nearing a year old and still good, a new record! I'd love to get 5 years out of these boots (perhaps with a re-sole). It would better help me live with the cost. |
Darth Snuggle wrote: I love that you mentioned Firefly; they are very "Mal".
Ha! Lee loves Firefly. He is buying a hat that is from the show. Except it's in brown and Lee swears he's not buying it because of Jayne. He's just buying it because he needs a hat. LOL Have you seen Dr. Horrible's Sing A-Long Blog? It's written by Joss Whedon and his brothers. It also stars Nathan Fillion. I about fell off my seat laughing when Fillion's part in the movie is singing his first song about how "a man's gotta do what a man's gotta do". You can watch it on hulu here http://www.hulu.com/watch/28343/dr-horr ... along-blog I think that I am actually going to buy it as I liked it so much. Comic book musical blog. I think that is the first one for me ever seeing. I hope they make a follow up. |
Are you kidding? Adam and I are HUGE fans. My mom even knit Adam his own "Jayne Hat". And Adam has done a couple of illustrations for the comic book that Joss Whedon wrote for the series. You can see his Firefly and Serenity art on this page of his website; if you click the images the full sized versions come open...

Double wow! Having published cover art for an little known SciFi comic book written as connecting material for a brief running but well loved TV series ... I must concede to your superior geekdom! Very cool. The odds are I will be compelled to buy the whole book series.
Robin has been gleefully telling her relatives how I'm buying Jayne's hat from the Firefly. The Firefly addicts (there are several) all respond, "Ha ha, that hat!" To which I reply, "No, the oilskin one from the cattle rustling episode." |

I'm having the same trouble with my husband..... But you know. I buy inexpensive but not cheap... for example last winter at the end of the season sales, I bought a $350. knee length coat , lambskin beautiful for the low low cost of $30. It was on sale for 75% off and then I thought wow what a great deal then when I got to the register they took an additional 50% off was I in heaven or what?? I live for sales. but I definately dont do cheap with clothes, shoes or appliances. Trying to talk hubby into a new fridge. Saw a really great one at sears I fell in love with. Hubby wants the cheap one. Keep telling him the shelves will break in a month NO so it looks like no new refridgerator for now. LOL |
