Two and a half years ago (approximately) a student I had had when I taught grade five passed away. She had CF, and although it was not entirely unexpected, it was sad and horrible nonetheless. This September another former student (taught him in grade four, was now 20) drowned. He was canoeing without a life jacket after too many drinks. (The young think they're invincible of course.) That was really sad, and completely avoidable. Yesterday another former student died. He was just barely 19 (taught him when he was in grade five, and taught his sister for two years in a row - I moved up). He was stabbed as a result of a fight at a house party and died in a 7 11 parking lot. This is even worse. Absolutely unnecessary and a terrible waste. I have been teaching for a while, but to lose three former students in such a short time and at such young ages is just a lot to take in. Especially this last one. He died about four blocks from where my current school is. The local ice cream stand is right beside it and all our kids frequent that 7 11. What a sad world. |

That is very sad, and shocking too. I'm sorry you have been through all this, when its a young life lost we often feel the sharp unfairness and it prompts us to question why. I think the world has become more violent and the danger of mental instability has increased with the wide availability of drugs including alcohol and easy access to violent and perverse stimuli.
It must be hard to work in an environment where you are nurturing young people and see their potential, then see that taken away. My prayers go out to you & the families involved. |
Its so sad to hear of such terrible waste.
I cant work out whether these terrible things are happening more or whether its just global news and an increased population making it seem that way. |
