Of course I can't find online help so I turn to you all. Do I have to buy Word (or Office) and if so, where's the best price? |

I used Open Office for a long time. It is a free version of word, you can download it at openoffice.org or you can use it online. It doesn't have all the same stuff as word and sometimes formatting is off between the two, but it worked just fine for me before I got a free copy. |
I thought that stuff came installed on all computers? |

It depends on the computer you buy and what software package comes with it. The Office suite isn't cheap to buy as a stand alone. Paula, what do you use Word for at home? Are there specific features that you need? Like Heather said, Open Office will get you through for most situations. If you're just typing, just use Notepad-- everyone can always open a .txt file. |
Jill, I would use it infrequently just for typing letters, etc. so the program Heather mentioned would probably work just fine for me. I would have no need at home for other parts of Office, like Excel or PowerPoint. |
If I buy a computer without Office can I use the disc I have from XP and load that on a new machine? |
download OpenOffice - it has the functionality and compatibilty of MS Office - and is free! |
