Milton will be 3 in February. For most of his 2's he was in the mid to high 80's...usually around 87 lbs. The last trip to the vet he was 95lbs and they said we were feeding him too much. He get's a 1/2 hour walk everyday and we have been feeding him 2 cups in the morning and 2 cups at night. I'm thinking we should cut back to 1.25 cups twice a day (morning and evening). I know every dog is a bit different and we do have a call into the breeder about this...but what do you guys/gals think? What do you feed you're OES? |

Depends on the brand and quality of the food etc.
I feed all my dogs pro plan puppy food chicken and rice, not large breed. Willy is a ten month old male who weighs about 80 lbs and is fed 5 cups a day, Panda is a female almost 5 yrs old and is free fed for now because she has pups but normally she gets 3 cups. Piper is 18 months old and gets 4 cups. |
I think it's a great idea. Although I guess if it were me, I'd cut back 1/4C then if needed 1/2C and so on... since you're going from 4 cups to 2.5, but I don't know how much weight your dog needs to lose.
I've always based how much my dog got by just feeling them. I give Yuki 2C in the morning and 2C at night. She's very skinny/athletic. When she starts looking hefty, I cut one of the 2C feedings to 1 3/4C. I go back and forth all the time and that seems to be enough to always have the vet give us the thumbs up. Also assuming the food given is a quality one too of course! |
I feed Tiggy (nearly 2 years) 1 cup morning and night. But I add yoghurt or goats milk in the morning and raw or cooked vege at night. |
My OES (Lucky) is 7 months and free fed..my Bichon (Teddy) is 12 years old and has always been free fed. |
If you can make the time, then more exercise is where I would go rather than cutting his food by guess work. |
I would go by what the label on your dog food recommends. We use Wolf King and it's recommended that my dogs get 4 cups of this. We divide it into morning and evening feedings.
My problem is that Wendel scarfs down his food and Asterisk will usually let hers wait until she's hungry. As you can imagine, if she doesn't eat it for a few hours, Wendel goes in and eats it for her. |

I'm thinking we should cut back to 1.25 cups twice a day (morning and evening). It's best to check with your breeder or vet. Just my view but if he's getting chunky on 2 cups 2x a day of the kibble you're currently feeding, I'd drop down to 1 1/2 cups 2x a day with some salt-free green beans to keep his tummy happy or another vegetable like broccoli or cauliflower if you already feed these as treats. But again, it's best to seek the advice of your breeder and vet. It's all about the calorie content in the food being fed, the activity level of the dog and the dog's own metabolism and how it processes the food. Any special health needs may also play a roll. |
I've been told by my vet to feed the recommended amount for the weight yo want your dog to be. So we feed Rudie the amount for an 80 lb dog even though he is 101 lbs
Plus we add green beans to keep our chow hound from getting mad that we reduced his diet. |
