Read any good books lately?

I'm an avid reader, moreso now that I have discovered that if I have a compelling book on audiobook I am more likely to groom longer or go to the gym. (I hate the gym, ick. The only reason I go is because I make myself ONLY listen to my books when I'm there or grooming).

I'm currently on Tolstoy's Anna Karenina, close to 2/3rds of the way through. I have a real affection for "The Great Books" but will really enjoy a good book.

What are you currently reading? What is your favorite book?

I love books! My two favorite reads from this summer:

1. The Book Thief
2. The Gurnsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society

Both set in the early 40's world war II era.

Just finished The Strain, freaky, but you have to like Zombies.

If you like the classics, Matthew Pearl writes a fiction series based on classic authors. I'm reading The Last Dickens. It's been a fun read. He's also has The Poe Shadow and The Dante Club, which I haven't read yet.
Lol, I am in the middle of a totally trashy series.....but not the worst (trashy wise) that I've ever read. They are J.R. Ward's Lover series. Honestly, though, I will read just about anything, and a friend lent these to me. I love a good book....so much better than TV. :D
Borrowed these from Stephanie (sneakysheepie) - trilogy by Sandra Gulland about the life of Josephine Bonaparte.

The 1st is "The many lives and sorrows of Josephine B"
and the 2nd is "Tales of passion, Tales of woe".
I need to get the 3rd one - "The last great dance on earth"
I also read, or at least listened to, the strain. I do love zombies, I think they are the most under-rated horror creation.

These are some great ideas, keep them coming. I've been thinking of trying a little Dostoevsky, specifically The Brothers Karamazov.
I tend to read cozy mysteries, preferably set in Britain between the 2 world wars. Rather limiting! I just finished "Paths of Glory" by Jeffrey Archer. It's a novelization of the life of George Mallory, who may have been the first to summit Everest (in the late 20s). He died on the mountain so there is no way of verifying if he made the summit. Really a good book.

I have been reading for the last year "An Idiot's Guide to World War One" and a biography of Albert Einstein. I will finish them someday. And I am continually reading a Harry Potter--now I'm working on Half-Blood Prince, in anticipation of the DVD.
I'm not into romance at all, give me mysteries and adventure. So yes, I read Clive Cussler ( ) and J.D. Robb, etc just started George Carlin's book "Last Words." Every so often throw in an obscure history book, just waiting for hubby to finish book on history of the Balkans...that out the to be a nap enducer.
I've been going through the Lee Child books. I LOVE, love, love them! That has been my happy author find this year.

Anybody keeping track of how many books they read this year? I still am. It's more than last year but I wouldn't have believed it. Right now I am getting side tracked by web comics so my book count hasn't been going up very fast at the moment. I have a stack of books still waiting for me to read from the library.

I was going to read that, something turned me off - I forget what. Good to hear it was worth it.
Im an ultra-voracious reader :D Mostly sci-fi, fantasy, mysteries, and science or historical non-fiction...although some of my all-time favorites fall into the historical fiction category.

Tragically, Ive discovered the joys (addictive obsession, I really mean  ) of reading fiction on the internet 8O 8O 8O DOOM.

Its like having a 24 hour Barnes and Noble sitting on my desk...and all free! 8) For somebody like me, who will cheerfully devour 3-5 books a week if given the chance, its both a boon to my wallet, and a death-nell to my productivity!!!!
Forgot this one'

"The art of racing in the rain"

Story told by the dog. It took several chapters before I decided I liked it.
Conroy's "South of Broad" very good.
I just started a new one - recommended by a dog friend.
It is called Winterdance, by Gary Paulsen. Subtitled - The Fine Madness of Running the Iditarod. It isn't new - 1994, and quite good so far.
And, I am using Laurel's Christmas card/bookmark - quite fitting!
Dawn, Winterdance is wonderful...and Gary Paulsen is one of my favorite authors from way back :D

I was lucky enough to get to meet him several times as a teenager, as he used to come up to Alaska fairly often and did talks in the schools. If you like this book, there are tons more by him out there, although most are aimed at a "young adult" audience.

Glad the "bookmark" is working out for ya  I may go ahead and design some on purpose now to sell...I used to make handprinted bookplates that I sold in packs of ten. I thought they were pretty cool, but stopped doing them when I realized that hardly anyone even knew what they were
Yes, I read in the notes that he has many other, mostly young adult books out. I am and always have been a huge reader, so I'm kind of puzzled why I haven't stumbled across his books before. :?

Anyway, I'm loving the book! :D

and I love the bookmark - and I even give cool bookmarks as gifts to my equally reading addicted kids and friends!
I'm getting ready to get my next audio book and I'm really interested in getting Blindness by jose saramago. It's a Portuguese book that revolves around a premise that the majority of the world inexplicably goes blind with only a few still with sight.

It's supposed to be one heck of a bummer, but still interesting premise.
