Do the male sheepdogs ever lift their legs to pee?

I have a male sheepdog puppy (7 mos.) who still squats when he pees. Will he ever start lifting his leg like male dogs usually do, and if so, when? It just seems strange that he still does this.

Thanks!

mine just started doing it on a consistent basis at the age of 4, and only after I told the rehab therapist (in front of him) that he NEVER lifts his leg.

I don't think its breed specific though, our Irish Setter is a squatter.
Our dog is 1y 1m and he started half-lifting every once in awhile a few months ago. It's like a half-lift, half-squat. I'd much rather my dog squat like a girl OR lift their leg up higher b/c mine just pees on himself all the time. I JUST got the hang of getting the smell out completely after each bathroom trip. He can now go a full 14 days before starting to need his next bath. It's progress. ;)
MacKenzie is six months and he only very occasionally lifts his leg. There's nothing consistent and I don't know what triggers it! Perhaps it's a wall!
He does it properly though when he does do it.

Our friend's OES is 40 weeks older and he has never done it.

Nick :)
I know tons of male oes who have never lifted their legs to pee. I do think it's more common in this breed actually.
sorry that's 4 weeks older not 40!

Nick
I have one that lifts every time and one that barely even bothers squatting. I have a Komondor that half lifts that I wish would pick one or the other because he drenches himself.
Jack does both......not at the same time. It's the girl, MO, who does both at the same time: cocks a leg and squats 8O

Harry is a lifter though most peeing is marking over others.

Males who don't see other guys marking may not know it's a "requirement." Also young guys or guys with hip issues may not feel comfortable lifting the leg skyward.

Personally, if they don't pee on them selves, I don't care what position they take!
My dalmo does both.
I think its to do with not weeing on himself. If the ground is concrete, asphalt or hard dirt he squats. If its longish grass or there is a tree or bush then he'll lift.
His outdoor space at home is a paved area and I've noticed he really hates getting pee on his legs, so I think he's worked out what surfaces splash and gets closer to stop the splashing on his legs. :D
I havent asked him if this is the reason just my guess.
Wendel used to lift his leg constantly when we first got him. After his castration, he just stretches his back legs and goes. One thing I wish he would do is more of a squat when he defecates... he just ever-so-slightly will curl his back, this tends to leave a nice streak of poo that needs to be constantly cleaned off. Yuck!
Chauncey does both as well. We have a large fenced yard with trees and I have only seen him squat here. When he goes on his walks, he will mostly lift his legs ( he ambidexterous ).
Our lab, Jake ( OTB ) was 13 and I never saw him even attempt to cock his leg. He was a lifelong squatter...........

My 3 year old does not usually lift his leg to pee...My first sheepdog lived to be 15 and never did lift his leg!
I wish this boy had never learned to lift his leg!!!
For a while and mostly itis just a slight lift, straight up about 2 inches, but now it seems whenever i leave the house he has decided to 'mark' and I am NOT happy!!! He will be getting a belly band on 24/7 if that is what it takes until he get's the idea this isn't welcome behaviour in this house!

grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr
Well, somebody is pissed off with you Ali! Good thing tile rules down there.

Thanks!

I would pray for no lifting of the leg!!!
Harvey is 2 now and I think I've seen him lift his leg about 2 or 3 times! I'm glad you started this topic because my husband and I thought he was just a little strange! lol
Barney is 5 and I think he's lifted his leg twice.
dreamer 1 no way duffy almost 2 is too lazy to
All of mine lift their legs - Even the girls  They squat and their little hind leg comes bobbin' right up. They're weird, I admit it.

Even weirder: One of the female dogs at our shelter lifts her leg just like a male does. 8O I KNOW this is a female but I admit I had to check underneath to be sure.
Based on my observation of my two boys, one who always lifts and one who only does it outside his own turf, I think there is a difference between peeing and marking. Toby, my sheepie, only lifts when he is outside his normal peeing area and then only dribbles. Alex, my mutt and the older male, has to wear a belly band inside because he marks constantly. But when he has to pee, he insists on going outside, although he always lifts, regardless of whether having to pee or just marking. Don't know if that helps one bit!
Jonah lifts his leg so high he almost falls over :D
Kody is 16 months old and has never once attempted to hike his leg...he has over squated before and peed all over his neck and chin...Ewww for that one!
Archie lifts so high sometimes he almosts topples over, if he is on grassed area ie no tree wall or lamp post then he stands and pees forwards (yes onto his legs! I think he does it deliberately so I let him go in the river to wash his legs off!)
