Our first Sheepie was named Prince, the breeders daughter
named him, and it was perfect !! We kept the name, and he really was a Prince among puppies. (They had 10 pups in the litter. Our current Sheepie is Bogart. We love old movies especially, Humphrey Bogart movies. We loved our pups tuxedo type markings, his elegant style, and his movie star quality. He draws a crowd wherever we go ! |
My girls names are loosely based on characters in a favorite series of books beginning with People Of The Wolf by W.Michael Gear and Kathleen O'Neal Gear. |
Years ago, before I rescued my dog Lucy, I had originally planned on a male dog who I was going to name Clive Barker, half after the author but half because, well, what a cute funny name for a dog. Well, I ended up with a girl so I named her after Lucille Ball. So I just kept the name in my head but when ever I would tell someone the name, they always heard it as Clyde. So, I decided it was easier to change it a little than repeat myself all the time. I think this comes from the fact that my name is Jill and people always always hear Joe!
His fancy name came from the South Park character Butters, first because he had the same hairdo and then second when we realized that they had the same birthday, September 11 |
The reason I'm calling Fangorn by his name is because everytime I see a OES - I think if Ents had dogs - they would look like that. It's just that their hair is so long and beard like that it makes them look like an old man in a way... and kind of wise - but also with a playful side.
My light haired fuzzball - Mr. Toji Halifax - means a couple things. Toji is from a comic book - Peach girl. The boy was pretty calm and collected and sometimes a bit dense - so I thought he was good for the name. Halifax literally means "Holy Hair" Well... he is a puff ball! Mr. Kiley Frisken: His name Kiley comes from the same graphic novel that Halifax's comes from. He lives up to his name as he is a super energetic goof ball who likes to get into trouble. Frisken means "the man with the ready sword." His nails are like swords right? |
Because Bentley was a rescue his name came with him. BUT it just happens that the lady who does the rescues in our area is also a breeder and a friend of our family's. Bentley was originally one of her puppies. My daughter had met him as a puppy and his name was Perry. Because of this, my daughter insists that his name be Bentley Perry. |
We struggled with naming our Shayleigh. We even went to the library and pulled up those baby name books. While at the library I happened across a book containing names of Scotland, and there found a few names we hadn't seen before. The four of us took a family vote between three of those scottish names and Shayleigh was the clear favorite.
The next OES will be easy. The kids have already picked out 'working' names for the imminent litter of pups - Tangles, Matts, McFluff, Velcro, Rugz, Shaggie-Too (my first OES was Shaggie), and If (the sire's name is Chance and my son loves the idea of naming a pup 'If by Chance'). We'll keep a female and the likely name will be Tangles. Life is going to get real busy real soon. hehe |
Roger was named by my youngest son at the time he was 4. Named after a Rescue Hero action figure... Roger Houston. The rescue boat says Roger, Roger. |
Hi there...
Pisco was names like that because he chose his own name.....somewhere in the old posts I posted how he came to his name ....but here it is again. Pisco is the name of an alcoholic drink made from grapes kinda like grappa, but is made only here (Peru); when I first got him he was Bucaneer but he never anwser to that name...we have a friend that produces the drink and comes often for a visit, and everytime we mention the drink or said the name the pup reacted to it...so we started calling him Pisco and he responded everytime....so I can say He picked his own name..... Vero, Pisco, Cris and Adrian |
Well my collie is Jagger and my OES is named Mickey,I chose these names due tot he fact i LOVE the rolling stones .I got my collie 1st and wanted something original, and my obsession w/ Mick jagger made it easy to name him jagger. So when I got my Miceky doodles it made sence to finsish off Mick Jaggers name so therefore he is Mickey |

My 6 yr old Son named Pepsi...His former owners called him Clyde.
But we figured after his bad experiences in the shelter..etc That he needed a new name for his new life. I had a Boxer a few years back and she was pregnant when I got her. I named her Pups for mostly the way they looked. We had Bear...he was the biggest of the pups. Petey the first born was white with a Brown and Black circle around one eye... Anyone know why I named him that...lol Then there was Toyota... He was born in the back of my friend's Toyota Forerunner on the way from the one Vet's Office up in the Mountains to their Main Office down the hill where they were going to perform the C-Section. They had given her pictocin to hopefully get the rest of the pups out. She had two boys...then no more progression for hours.. So we took her to the Vet. Toyota was the third boy. The C-section gave us three girls. My friend Chrissy named them. My first Poodle was named Scooter because when I rescued him he would Scoot away and hide from everyone... That didn't last for long...but his name did. My second Toy Poodle is named Peanut... He is beige and was so tiny... It just fit Elissa |
Cool post....here's our take sorry it's long and there is some backgroud about my wife's weird pet naming habits. Sorry it's long, but somewhat interesting!
Below is a story about how and why we are naming our dog "Pooh Bear" or more formally "Winnie ther Pooh" As some of you know, Andi has had a habit throughout her life on cross gender naming pets: Marvin was a girl cat, Eyeore was a boy hamster, Christopher Robin is a girl cat, and now Pooh Bear is a boy doggie. What follows is the rationale behind that and how we came up with the name. This is all an excerpt from an email from Scott Fleisch, edited for content and to fit your screen. ....and last but not least, Pooh Bear (or Winnie). Little known fact that is very appropriate for you guys: Winne the Pooh, created by A.A. Milne, was inspired by Winnipeg the Bear - see below for full history (from http://vt.essortment.com/historywinniet_rmeu.htm). During World War I, troops were being moved across country from Winnipeg(Manitoba, Canada) and heading east for European shores. On one such train ride in 1914, and at a layover in White River, Ontario, a lieutenant by the name of Harry Colebourn purchased an orphaned black American bear cub for $20 from a trapper who had killed its mother. Colebourn named the bear "Winnipeg" after his hometown. Winnipeg quickly earned the affection of the 2nd Canadian Infantry Brigade and traveled on to England with them as their mascot. However, after the troops were assigned duty in France, it was clear that he wouldn't be able to accompany them any further. Colebourn, who had been advanced to the rank of Captain, took Winnipeg to the London Zoological Gardens for what was supposed to be a temporary, if long loan. Colebourn formally presented the London Zoo with Winnie in 1919 on his return, after noting the bear's growth and the staff's attachment to "Winnie". Winnie was a popular attraction until his demise on May 12th, 1934. It was during Winnie's stay in the London Zoo that he became a part of legendary fiction. In 1924, on an excursion to the London Zoo with neighbor children, Christopher Robin Milne, son of author A.A.Milne, was introduced to Winnie for the first time. There are conflicting stories as to whether Christopher was frightened to the point of tears when he initially saw the ten-year old bear in the polar bear house or whether he immediately took to Winnie. Despite any fear that might have existed, Christopher was able to overcome it and was known to spend time with Winnie inside the bear cage. On one incident in which he was photographed feeding Winnie milk, A.A.Milne can be spotted in the background behind the bars. Christopher's visits to the London Zoo to be in the company of Winnie spawned a literary journal by his father. The child had grown to care about the bear so much that he began referring to his teddy bear at home as "Winnie...Winnie the Pooh". (Originally, the name "Pooh" had belonged to a swan that can be seen in the introduction of Milne's 'When We Were Very Young'.) So, it wasn't long before Milne was inspired to maintain a journal of stories about Winnie the Pooh. The journal entries included all the familiar characters such as Eyeore, Piglet, Tigger, Kanga, and Roo and were based on the stuffed animals of Christopher's as well as Owl and Rabbit who, like the swan, were live animals on and around Milne's country estate, Crotchford Farm in Ashdown Forest, Sussex, England. (The 100-Acres-Wood from the books.) Milne gathered his entries together to produce three consecutive Winnie the Pooh books in collaboration with Shepard. 'Winnie the Pooh' went into print on October 14th, 1926 while 'Now We Are Six' followed in 1927 and 'The House on Pooh Corner' was published in 1928. The Pooh books along with Milne's 'When We Were Very Young' have sold millions of copies, have been translated into nearly every language, and have become a household favorite with the young and old alike all over the world. Winnie has seen many changes over the years, beginning with a bear in the London Zoo to the imaginations of a boy and his father and onto the major star power he is today. Whether you're a fan of the original Shepard-drawn versions, Disney's creation, both, or merely curious as to Winnie's origin, you can now say with all certainty you know where Winnie came from. Even more impressive, is that Winnie is a girl's name - yet Winnie the Pooh was a boy (while Winnipeg the Bear was actually a female). A pure Andi trait - one she apparently shares with Christopher Robin from the original Pooh stories. In the original book, there is an exchange between Christopher Robin and his father about the gender of his teddy bear, Winnie the Pooh (also referred to as "Winne-ther-Pooh"). I prefer "Pooh Bear" to "Winnie" for your dog, but see below: The first chapter of the book clearly establishes Pooh's gender. Milne wrote: When I first heard his name, I said, just as you are going to say, "But I thought he was a boy?" "So did I," said Christopher Robin. "Then you can't call him Winnie?" "I don't." "But you said---" "He's Winnie-ther-Pooh. Don't you know what 'ther' means?" "Ah, yes, now I do," I said quickly; and I hope you do too, because it is all the explanation you are going to get. |
bestdogsx4, I just reread your post and started thinking: how could you pass up a chance to name your dog Boss Hog? I hope that's next on the list for your next addition to the family |
I could change Daisy's name to Boss Hog. She's very bossy and since being spayed is turning into somewhat of a piggie |
Your post was great! I never realized the history behind the story. Thanks |
I just love scottish names for oes,s It was a descision between Dougal and Hamish we settled on Dougal. I just love men in kilts and anything scottish. My friend has an oes called Timber she say's reason being when he runs at you. You can be felled like a tree.

Hi Bestdogsx4,
While we are on the subject of naming sheepdogs, just love some of the creativity in the names of OES champions from years ago ! Here's a few of my favorites: Ch. Sunnybrae Jack Frost Ch. Merriedip Master Pantaloons Ch. Merriedip Bob-A-Long Ch. Snowman Ch. Snowflake Ch. Rosmoore Smarty pants Ch. Ideal Weather Ch. Tamara's Shaggy Shoes MacDuff Ch. Shaggy Bar Bottoms Up |
I love those! My friend had OES and always had cool names, their call names came from their AKC ones:
Ribbons and Lace(Lacey) Christmas Rose(Christy) English Rose(Diana) Magnolia Blossom(Maggie) Tale O' the whale(Jonah) She had many more but I don't remember them all I have no imagination at all, my dogs call names have nothing to do with their AKC names Bell Bottom Blues(Beau) Daydream Believer(Luke) Amadeus(Rosco) Hugs and Kisses(Daisy) |
The first OES Danita and I met up close was in a park. We were sitting on a bench and then a guy passed by walking his doggie. He called him... "Come Lennon, Come!"
We decided that if we ever had a dog, he would be an OES and his name would be Lennon... Besides, we like The Beatles. Sofa's name is because she's a couch potato. Her original name was Sofia, but we wanted to change her name to something different to erase the last trace of her former owner... I voted for Yoko, but Sofa's a much fun name. |
My husband Ed got me a surprise puppy when we bought our house this past summer. I thought he was going to get me a Beagle so when we went to pick my surprise puppy out I said 'It's Not a Beagle' That's how Nab got her name. When we decided we wanted another dog Ed picked the name again...Jas - Just another Sheepie. We get her this Friday! |
Everyone is getting puppies but me |
Bestdogsx4
The perk of being Bestdogsx5 is you get to name another sheepie !! |
I wish! The only names left are Cletis and Boss Hog.....unless there are some I don't know about?????? |
Quote: I wish! The only names left are Cletis and Boss Hog.....unless there are some I don't know about??????
How about Cooter ? |
Lance, Coy, Enos, Cletus, Lulu.....you want some more Dukes names? |
luLu is cute but Cletis is my father-in-laws name and he wouldn't be flattered . Was the car's name General Lee? |
But I have been thinking of moving on to....maybe the Brady Bunch? Three girls though, I don't know if I could handle that. Would an OES named Jan sound weird? |
Jan sounds fine, do you remember the "Marcia! Marcia! Marcia!" episode? |
Yup, General Lee. Here are some more characters form over the course of the first 2 seasons:
Tillie (Uncle Jesse's Ridge Running car) Miss Emma Tisdale (postmistress) Swamp Molly Hughie (Boss' nephew) I meant Vance before, not Lance Oh, here's a good one 'Grannie Annie" I kid you not |
I love all those and may have to reconsider the Brady Bunch....but all those girls |
