hope I am posting in the right place!! I am hoping to raise the subject of HC, and get some support in the form of cheek swabs submitted to the AHT in the UK. They are very short of specimens for research, and this research is the only way that they will be able to find a DNA tesy for HC in the OES. I have swab kits available, please contact me. once a test is found, this disease could be eradicated with responsible breeding. It is devastating to discover your 2 year old show dog is totally blind........believe me. many thanks |

Hi.
Would this be considered juvenile cataracts? Is there an ongoing breed (OES) specific study in the UK? Any other details you can share? Are they merely looking for DNA from afflicted dogs, or also from relatives of afflicted dogs or...? For the underinformed among us (e.g me ), what is the AHT? In terms of getting the word out it would probably be helpful, in the US at least, to contact the OESCA Health and Research Committee (if that hasn't been done already) and ask them for their cooperation. They can probably help get your information out there. Contact info can be found at www.oeshealth.org And, yes, a blind two year old would be very devastating indeed. best, Kristine |
Hi Kristine!
Yes, there is breed specific research at the Animal Health Trust (AHT!!!) in the UK. The are looking for specimens from any OES at the moment, but affected or relations obviously be good. Thanks for the website link, I will contact them kind regards Penny |
Thanks, Penny. That's very exciting!
If you're interested in DNA from any OES from anywhere in the world, mine are happy to contribute, all closely related, pedigrees will be included if needed. I'm familiar with doing cheek swabs, so piece of cake. I'll PM you my contact information and if you think my dogs' contributions would be helpful, they and I are happy to help. They're especially happy there are no needles involved this time (They're used to donating blood for health research ) Kristine |
Kristine.........
have emailed Bryan at the AHT to ask if worldwid swabs would be helpful.....will let you know. my OES is the grandson of an American dog, so should be interesting!! Penny |
Sounds good. Keep us posted!

I sent you a PM as well to participate w/ ours |
I'm sure the need is for DNA from affected dogs and not from just any dog ...
There has been a dog diagnosed with cataracts in Germany last year (or so) so probably you would be luckier if you contacted the German Club (CfBH). |

That question was already addressed further up the thread. Obviously affected samples are needed most of all. Kristine |
Most of all or just affected dogs? I too contacted the AHT last year and they told me they were willing to collect DNA from any affected dog with any disease of any breed but didn't talk about making a DNA bank from healthy dogs. Perhaps it would be good to clarify that before sending samples ... |
From the AHT site:
Quote: CAN YOUR DOG CONTRIBUTE TO THE AHT’S INHERITED DISEASE RESEARCH? Below are some questions that will help you determine whether your dog can contribute to the AHT’s inherited disease research and assist with the development of a diagnostic test in your breed: Q. Which dogs can contribute to the AHT’s research A. There are two types of dog that are useful to our research: - Any dog of any breed that has been diagnosed as AFFECTED with any of the conditions under investigation. - Close relatives of affected dogs. By close relatives we mean parents, siblings or grandparents |
Hi..............at this stage they are collecting samples from any dogs..............after all, affected are obvious, but carriers are not!!! |
