Scary moment at the dog park today

Brick & I were at the dog park today (sunny, high 60s). Tons of dogs.
3 other dogs were playing chase. The first 2 cleared a fire hydrant that's in the middle of the park (it's a real hydrant, don't know if it's actually hooked up or just a prop for the dogs). The third dog wasn't so lucky. He smashed into the hydrant probably running about 2/3 power.
His head turned to the right, his back legs came off the ground, and he spun around 180 degrees and the skidded across the ground. Some of his fur came off. Kind of like when a car hits another car or telephone pole.
There was a dull thud when he hit it. I was right there. He came right to me when I called him. He was limping but I couldn't tell which leg or paw was involved. In all honesty, I thought he ran into it head first. Another person said he clipped it with his right rear leg.
His owners came over and we explained what happened. The guy was checking him over pretty good. They stayed for a little while longer. The dog wasn't limping by the time they left. He actually shook the limp off pretty quickly.
They took him outside the park for a walk and then brought him back. He seemed to be OK.

I told them to monitor him closely and get to the vet hospital ASAP if they notice any changes in his behavior. I told them he took a real hard hit.

I can't imagine the dog having no injuries from that hit. All the people in that area winced out loud.

If that were Brick or Zeke, I would have leashed them up and went right to the vet ER. No sense in taking any chances.

My stomach has been in a knot since it happened.
He's a soft coated wheaten terrier mixed with something else (can't remember what). He was pretty shaggy and reminded me of an OES because he was so shaggy. He was mostly white, with tan streaks in his fur, and probably 2-3 inches shorter than Brick. VERY cute.

I hope he's alright.

Scary! I hope he is allright too. Poor doggie.
Why the heck would they put a fire hydrant smack in the middle of a dog park run? I would guess its a real hydrant they couldn't move...Gee, hope that doggy is okay. The owners didn't see it happen I guess? Which pisses me off...You are responsible for watching your dog at a dog park. Its not social hour for humans...

Hopefully this dog is okay. You did what you can do. The rest is in the hands of the owner...
It's amazing the hits these guys can take and, literally, walk off. My boys like to run around the garage in opposite directions and then tackle each other around the corners. They've hit so hard a few times, I've checked their mouths to make sure no teeth were gone. Clyde and Bear sound like linebackers when they hit each other. It's amazing to me that they walk away from the things that they do.
They can be lucky or unlucky. 8O

Sometimes a lesser knock does more damage and other times they can get away with just some bruising from a biggie. I hope its the later in this boy's case. :crossed:

It does leave a horrible feeling in your gut after you see it happen though.

Exactly. Why is it there? If it's just a prop, why not use a hollow plastic one so nobody and no dog gets hurt.
If it's real, why not move it to just outside the fenced area. Are they afraid a fire is going to start in the middle of a dog park?

In all fairness to the owners, it's tough to be on top of your dog or right next to him at all times, especially when they are running. I do my best to follow Brick around. But when he sprints away from me, he's gone.
As soon as they saw people making a fuss around their dog, they came running over.
A long time ago our Jake misjudged a jump from our driveway over a 2 foot stone wall up to our entrance. He was going full tilt and both front legs hit the sharp edge of that stone wall with that sickening thud.

It was like nothing happened. He always was the macho alpha dog and had such a high threshhold for showing any signs of pain.
I was told by one of our vet techs that their dog had t-boned another while playing... it seemed fine but ended up paralyzed the next day and later had to be euthanized.

Early on, Kaytee t-boned another dog a couple of times... we were afraid she'd break her neck so she has to play outside by herself. She's most happy when she can full speed in her flight path.

We also have a block wall near the back door that she had gradually begun running closer too... she would approach it head on. So we put a bush in before it so she'd have to adjust her path and it might help to cushion a blow. The bush died so we put a mound of zucchini there this summer along with a ring of lattice. The ring of lattice will stay up.

That's exactly what I'm afraid of with this dog.
Ugh. I hate that sound. :?
Its totally amazing what some dogs can take...

Case in point. A few days after getting Gar, he RAN head first into a tree. Got up, shook it off, and back at play. At the dog park, Gar was chasing another dog, full out running. A little dog ran into Gar's flight plan. He never saw it. Went head over heels, rolled and slid. I thought for sure he was going to be hurt. So did the other people that saw it happen, including the little dogs owner. I ran over to him, he got up(covered in dirt) and looked around like WHAT HAPPENED??? No visible signs of injury.

We left after that.

I hope that other dog is ok.
