At first I thought he had a hair at the back of his throat, he was sniffing then kind of trying to hack something up and I thought 'hairball'.. he's been doing it once every 2 or 3 hours or so, for a few days now. Do you think he has a hairball? Or is it a cough? Is kennel cough a general term for a cough like a cold? How serious is it? He hardly has any contact with other dogs, just a brief sniff or quick chase, which is what he was doing 3 days ago which makes me think he may have caught something, is that possible? |

Kennel cough (bordatella) is an upper respiratory bug - passed around like the common cold is among humans. One of the common signs is the cough. It sounds like the dog is choking on something or has a stick caught in their throat and they are trying to cough it out. The vet can illicit the cough by applying pressure on the trachea when diagnosing it.
It usually runs it's course. If it turns into bronchitis or pneumonia (a bacterial infection now) then it can be treated with antibiotics. Other meds can be given to calm the coughing if needed. |
sure its not that funny sneeze thing that sounds like a hair ball?
What is Reverse Sneezing? Reverse sneezing, also known as the "mechanosensitive aspiration reflex" is a common phenomenon in dogs. In a regular sneeze, your dog pushes air out through the nose; however, in a reverse sneeze, air is pulled rapidly in through the nose producing a noisy inspiratory effort. What a Reverse Sneeze Looks Like "During a reverse sneeze, your dog will make rapid inspirations, stand still with his elbows spread apart, extend his head, and his eyes may bulge. He'll make a loud snorting sound, which might make you think he has something caught in his throat. Many dog owners think their pet is suffocating during a reverse sneeze episode. Each reverse sneezing occurrence generally lasts for less than a minute up to two minutes." |
I was wondering if it was a reverse sneeze as well.
But the other alternative is throat irritation. I had Tiggy at the vets earlier this year as I thought she had kennel cough. He said he thought she had an irritated throat, and was she likely to have chewed/eaten something she shouldnt have? Well this is Tiggy!!! Of course she's likely to have chewed/eaten something she shouldnt have! You know DH glasses, a mobile phone etc. He said to give it a couple of days and see if it settled. When I got home DH admitted she had stolen two mini foil pie plates after he'd eaten the apple pies for dessert. Apparently there were only a few bits left on the floor. So all the scratchy foil got swallowed. Tiggy's cough got worse for 2-3 days then settled over the next 5-6 days. It definitely sounded like she was trying to cough up a hair ball too. |
Reverse sneezing... ...This forum is amazing.
I'll watch him more carefully when he does it next, can't think of anything strange he's eaten. Hint Of Mischief |
We had the same symptoms a few months ago and it indeed was kennel cough. Both my dogs had it. We did get some medication and cough suppresant. I think the cough medicine was more for us humans to sleep at night without hearing that cough
They were fine in a few days. But be on the watch as it can sometimes get into the chest and become pnemonia. Hope she feels better soon. |
Could be Kennel cough! Take him to the vets... cassie. |
I watched some videos on youtube of backwards sneezing and kennel cough- and I'm sure it's backwards sneezing. We are taking Ru to the vet next week anyway so I'll get him to have a look while we are there. Thanks everyone, your replies have really helped. |
Did you find out what it is?
Hope Ru is ok. |
