Herding title

This weekend Belle finished her Junior Herding Dog title (JHD). I brought her out of retirement just to play, but our instructor convinced me to enter her. I was a bit <?> sceptical given Belle's insistence that herding is best accomplished at full throttle and stopping or even slowing down is for weenies. Saturday's run was actually pretty respectable. Yesterday the goats were rebelling and everyone was having a hard time making the little buggers flock, but she pulled it off.

She'll be 12 years old in January. I am, as I have always been, completely in awe of Ms Perfect. She's titled in breed, agility, obedience, rally and now herding, and a retired therapy dog, but of everything she's ever done, herding remains her favorite. We'll keep playing as long as she tells me she wants to.

I'll see if I can dig up some pictures (there was a professional photographer there) and there is video - frightening thought  . Actually, that was the theme of the weekend, it being Halloween and all. It'll take a little while to pull it all together. Right now we're both kind of zzzzzzzz. Great weekend though.

We were the only OES entered, but there was a lovely working Bouv bitch I taped doing Ranch Dog. Blew me away.

Yeah, sure, that's one way of putting it....though they can be evil at the drop of a hat. Whilst sheep are kind of, how to put this politely? stupid, goats can expend a fair amount of energy trying to figure out how not to expend any energy

There are only three at this test level. I gave the set we had today nick names: there was Pepperoni, Salami and Baloney.   Pepperoni & Salami weren't actually too bad, but Baloney kept trying to bolt. Belle had to keep bringing the bugger back and had to really work to keep him with the program of going through the cones and the gates. Even on the re-pen, which went as smooth as silk yesterday - the goats couldn't wait to escape from the evil gray and white hair monster - Baloney was balking and being a butthead. Of course, Belle saw him being bad and started walking up on us. I'm not sure if that helped or made him more beligerant.

Sad to say doing herding doesn't necessarily instill you with great empathy for the stock. In his case by the end of the run I was indeed imagining him on a nice tasty sandwich... :P    What can I say? It's a different world. Mostly the sheep are very kind to us, but the goats can be plain evil. Good thing they're (mostly) pretty cute. Especially the pygmies.

I honestly didn't think we had qualified today, but the judge told me we did a good job as we exited the arena and apparently it wasn't just to make me feel better about our rather hair-raising run...

My limited experience of sheep and even more limited experience of goats tallies with your description.

Sheep are dumb and often scared but essentially nice critters and goats are just plain

I liked your nicknames for the little monsters.
Congratulations..BELLE and Kristine!!!! :excited: :roses: :excited:

Well, I can't argue with that.   She has all the instinct and talent. I, on the other hand, have to call Dawn all the time: "and then the stock did THIS. What does that mean??????" Makes agility seem easy in comparison 8O

It's fun though. Probably the most exciting thing I've ever done with any of my dogs.

Good thing Shannon prodded you into testing, right???

I agree, the goats are much more devious, so maybe Sybil feels she is among kindred spirits? Or maybe it brings out sibling rivalry.

Well, that could explain a few things....

Now that I've gone through it with a dog I trust to always do the right thing, my goal is to get Sybil ready for her JHD in time for our spring trial.

Perhaps being (apparently :? :P) closely related to the stock will work to our advantage :?:

Kristine
AHEM! Poor Sybil and of course PERFECT Belle ;)

Great job Guys!!
