Half a Shave!

My poor dog was a half shaved sheepdog for halloween! I have new cordless clippers and was giving him a nice shorty hairuct when suddenly the charge went dead! Ha ha...Never was able to get back to it due to Halloween so today I will try to finish. He hates being groomed and I can't take him to a pro due to some contagious infection he is still getting over so its me and my clippers!

My question is...when clipping, how much pressure do you put on your hand? do I make sense? I'm always afraid to get too close and it seems I don't put enough presure to get off alot of hair. Also, is it best to go with the hair or against it?

What number blade are you using? I think the amount of pressure you have to use really depends on which blade you're using versus the condition/texture of the coat.

Always go with the grain of the hair.
I was using a 10. Coat is in good condtion but his is very thick and course. A few small mats in the usual places, under the neck, "elbow" area. He's been difficult to keep. He was in the hospital ten days a few months ago and matted badly so I took him down short. Not to the skin but short. Plus his legs were shaved in various places because they had to move the IV every few days. He was a mess.

I was able to get the mats out but that left an uneven wierd look 8O So I let him grow in some and then evening him out, then grwowing in again. Its been a process of sorts! He looks okay now and I hope to get him to a pro groomer within the next few weeks once we get the okay he can go there.

I was going with the grain of the skin so at least I did one thing right
Summer hates clippers o I keep cutting bits off with small scissors, she looks weird...
Using a 10 shouldn't require too much pressure at all. I find it usually goes through like butter but maybe that's because I try to clip a tangly dog with a 3 3/4-- and that requires some work! By the time I switch to the 7 or the 10, it feels gloriously easy. ;)
If you are having trouble getting thru, the blade may be dirty or dull. Normally after I finish, I got back over the the whole dog....with the hair...to even things up. Face and legs are a challenge, but the bodies come out great.

Don't know what the temps will be next few months, but if cold, you might want to invest in a dog sweater for walks. Around the house he'll be fine.
If your clippers have always been this way it may be
that you had a coating on your blade. Some come that
way and you need to get it off or it won't cut right. Also
when I shave mine I use a blade wash- frequently - while
clipping. It keeps the blades cooler and keeps the dust
out. Dust and dirt are going to dull your blades quicker
than anything. After you are done clean the blade really
well and you are less likely to reinfect with whatever
infection he is carrying. I don't know what it is, but I
figured I'd throw that out there.

Yes, I do disinfect after using. He had the MRSA virus in his ears. I disinfect the blade with alcohol...could that be dulling the blade?
I doubt the alcohol is dulling the blade.

Hi Shellie,
I bought a new Oster A5 and it won't cut my dogs fur at all. It will cut MY hair and my wife's hair but not the dog hair. I have watch the hair as it
enters the clipper teeth but the hair does not pass through the teeth, it moves along and passes out with out actually entering the cutting area of the teeth.
Is it possible this coating you mention is the problem . . . . or how bout static electrical charges, reverse polarity between dog hair and clipper?
If the blade came with a coating, how would you know it and how would you get the coating off?
