I will take him to our vet shortly and have him examined and get the necessary meds for him. No doubt the other two will follow sometime this week . |

Stewart, that stinks!
If it really is kennel cough he probably doesn't need meds, you just let it run its course and try not to let them overexert themselves. But it never hurts to check. And your other two, being older, may already have built up natural immunity. I've brought it home with foster dogs, breeder brought it home from a show once and one dog brought it home with him from the vets when he was neutered (his sisters got it, but the older dogs did not). At this point all of mine have had it and even when directly exposed don't get it any more, so at least some good will probably come from it. Hope he feels better soon. Kristine |
Tonks got a really nasty case of Kennel cough once, and Luna never picked it up from her. So maybe Zorro will keep his germs to himself?
Sorry to hear you are going through this, and hope Zorro is better soon! |
Unfortunately Zorro had kennel cough last year, also picked up from a show, although he did pass it on both Misty and Hamish had relativly light case. This time he has it much worse and the meds are necessary to ease his coughing, lets hope he gets over it soon. |
I am sorry to hear that Zorro is sick. I hope he feels better soon. |
i have a silly question - Does the bordatella shot up their nose help them not catch kennel cough? is it not good to have them receive bordatella? |
Hi Carol! How is gigi doing since her surgery? I hope all was a success.

Hi Stewart
What kind of vaccines (type, brand) do your dogs receive? I only had one case of kennel cough, when I left one bitch in a hotel during my holidays. She wasn't vaccinated against parainfluenza and when she returned home the other dogs, who weren't vaccinated either, also caught it. All except one, he was the single one that had the Pi shot. After that, all my dogs get the Pi shot and I never had any more cases, even if once, at a show, there was a dog at some 2 m distance that clearly had kennel cough, and have stayed several times at dog hotels. Kennel cough is usually benign but a course of antibiotics, to prevent complications, is beneficial. And some ear plugs for you, so you can sleep |
Antibiotics are commonly prescribed for kennel cough but,
I sometimes wonder if it is not just to make the owner feel better We have had a few that we let it run it's course and they do fine.... I try not to overuse antibiotics as it lowers their immunity in the long run..... Just my two cents, whether it is right or not is alll opinion The Bordatella Vaccine only vaccinates against one strain of kennel cough and there are many more than that out there. My dogs actually got kennel cough more often when we vaccinated every 6 months for it. |
Oh No!! poor Zorro |

My dogs actually got kennel cough more often when we vaccinated every 6 months for it. Sorry. Shouldn't laugh. My vet's husband was just horrified when she intentionally exposed his Dane puppy to a client's KC infected dog. When she told me she asked if there were any of my dogs I wanted exposed but I reminded her that they'd all been exposed before. Belle is the only one who never had any symptoms. They were all pretty mild cases, but at the time I had three littermates cacking ear plugs would have been a nice thought Anyway, vet is a little unconventional. She doesn't offer this "service" to all of her clients and will give bordatella vaccines upon request Kristine |
My dog brought home kennel cough after being hospitalized a few days. My older dog caught it. So they both were hacking together
Neither ever got the bortedella ( spelling?) shot but got it now. I don't think I would just let things run their course. Kennel cough is like a human cold I believe. But some dogs don't ahve the immune system of others. You run the risk of it getting into their "chest" and turning into pnemonia. Better a Vet check them out. So in my opinion, I would always get a Vet to check them out... Hope all is well soon! |
we do Bordatella vaccinations, but Tonks still got Kennel Cough. We kennel and do doggy day care often enough that we have to get the shots. |

Kennel cough you are right is a virus...and viuses do run their course.. With an older/immune suppresed dog it may be best to treat with antibiotics if they are showing more severe symptoms. This is all coming from a few experiences...we do rescue and have had some dogs come in with kennel cough. Isolation has helped alot, treating the active cough with a cough suppresant. Kennel Cough is air borne....knock on wood we have been lucky! My biggest fear is hearing when Quin was diagnosed with Lymphoma that was proabably alot in part due to his years on antiobiotics and steroids for his skin issues. That really lowered his immunity Had I known.... So, that is why I try to steer away from abs unless really needed. I could be way off base BUT, this is my thought! Anyway, Good Luck Zorro and Stewart! I am sure he will be fine... TLC and he will be back to new! |
Henry just had a bout of kennel cough. I was letting it run its course but he developed a green goo coming out of his eyes and nose. My Vet ordinarily does not prescribe antibiotics but he said the green goo meant he had developed a bacterial infection and so Henry got the meds and it cleared him right up. He said that with puppies the infection could lead to pneumonia (I think or something like that). Maggie had a brief cough but never really got noticeably sick and so I did not give her any antibiotics and she was fine. |
