H1N1 Flu Shot

Are you getting the H1N1 Flu Shot?

It's a long time before it's available here. While I'm in the group w/ compromising health concerns.........I don't know if I'll get it or not. I guess I'm figuring by the time the vax clears all the kids, the season will be over...???
Nope. No way. I am sure these vaccines are much improved but all I remember was getting a flu shot back in high school & getting sooooooo sick! I don't seem to get the flu most times. I'll get a good cold now & then but the flu seems to pass me by.
I have always gotten the regular influenza shots - I am an RN and exposed to WAY more than the average person. For 20 yrs I worked as a hospital nurse, including taking care of those ill w/ influenza sick enough to require hospitalization. I also worked part time many years (12+) as a nurse in schools.
My current homecare client is at risk - 60 yrs old, has a trach and spends 3/4 time on a vent. If I were to give somrthing to my client because I passed up on a vaccination that could have prevented it, I would feel really bad.

I never have had any reaction at all the the shots. For me, the benefits greatly outweigh any risk. So, when the H1N1 becomes available to me, I will get it.
I no longer work at the hospital, and they got vaccine for all staff w/ direct patient care. My neice in radiology already got her vaccine - in the 1st round. She had no reaction - and she is one who was always on ABX for the slightest thing as a kid, so never developed any kind of immune system of her own.....along w/ her siblings. As a note - my kids complained (as kids do) that we "never took them to the doctor" - and thought I was a mean mom who made them suffer through annoying childhood illnesses - well now they LOVE it, as they are healthy and rarely get sick....
I got H1N1 a mnth ago, so no reason to get the shot. :?

In all seriousness, I wasn't going to anyway; I'm not a believer in all the vaccinating; for dogs or people. By doing all these flu shots, we're really just creating strong more resilient forms of the flu. That's why they specifically recommend them for certain groups; like the elderly, children, health care works, etc.
I wasn't going to but I think I would. I don't want to bring the flu into our home. I'd be devastated if I gave it to my husband and something happened to him. But from the looks of things, the supply is pitifully inadequate...

That's what... enough vaccine for only 1.5% of the people in Michigan? :?

I think that's more of a concern with bacteria and antibiotics than with viruses. In fact not being vaccinated likely give the flu an opportunity to infect you and to successfully mutate with another virus in your body, as extremely unlikely as that is.

Resistant bacteria occurs when all of an infection is not eradicated and the remaining microbes are the ones that were hardiest against the antibiotic. Do that enough times and by "natural selection" processes subsequent generations become very hardy, or resistant.

Virus vaccine "simply" pre-conditions your immune system to be able to recognize a strain and be ready to attack and kill it quickly. It leaves your immune system in the same state as if you had already contracted that particular strain and recovered from it.
I'm just not afraid of getting the flu.
Nope.

I'm not in a high risk group.

I never get flu shots.

And back in June I had a twelve day fever (not terribly high) with a cough, so there's a pretty good chance I already have had it.
Always get the normal flu shot (except when I'm pregnant despite it being recommended). Will not get this shot though. Too many unknowns.
I had always recieved the seasonal flu vaccine ( ER/transport nurse ) and never had a problem. A very wise employee health nurse always had a pewter bowl of packaged tylenol tablets on her desk. Her advice, take 2 now and 2 in 4-6 hours. This prevented the occasional body aches that can accompany the injection.
I have not been able to take any live vaccine for the last 5-6 years because of all the immuno-supressants I take for my lupus. So even though high risk I can't.
Yep As soon as I can. I got the seasonal flu shot earlier this month and will get H1N1 as soon as I locae a source as I am in the targeted population.
I'm healthy as the proverbial horse and have weathered any virus that has offered to invade my system over the years, including the swine flu in the 70's which almost permanently kicked by behind.

I spend my week in a Petri dish, at least 2-4 different airplanes and hotels with thoughtless sneezing/snot blowing people. (Pet Peeve for me sick people or their children that are thoughtless and go into public to share their germs)

Even with consistant exposure I rarely have more than a seasonal cold, until this week. I have been swined. It is bad enough to make a completely healthy, uncompromised adult stay in bed. Nothing keeps me in bed past the 7 required hours of sleep, but I dedicated, not by choice, three days to prone recovery position. One full week later, I'm still sleeping 10 hours 8O 8O 8O and trying to get it out of my system. Imagine what this will do to a child or someone with compromised or even a marginal level of health.

I get annual flu shots even though I'm healthy. If something soooo simple that protects me, keeps me on my feet and most importantly not part of the contamination chain, it's a no brainer. I'm still planning on getting a swine flu shot even though I'm told I have a level of immunity since spending quality time with it this week. It's the least I can do to keep from spreading this to others.
I'll get it when it's available. I work at a hospital (but not in patient care) so it will be free and I see no reason NOT to get it.

Oooh :( I hope you'll be feeling better soon.
Thank goodness I can do this...

All the public schools in my area closed for the week this afternoon.

Wow. Personally being on week four of being sick, and it all started with H1N1, I understand not wanting to mess around! unfortunately, the vaccination was available here the week AFTER I got sick, so it was a moot point for me.

Now; a concern that I had over heard in the doctors office, but I may have mis-heard. With supply being so much lower than demand, I thought I heard them saying that the H1N1 vaccination required a second, booster type vaccinate 6 weeks after the first, and they were expecting to not have any left by then. Has anyone else heard this? Like I was saying, it was something I overheard, and its likely I got it wrong.

Thanks I needed that! After a week of making everyone stay away from me, a hug is great even at a distance. :D

I decided this morning I will not be sick a moment longer!(cough, hack, oink, sneeze, cough)

I believe the second shot requirement is for very limited circumstances. I figure after having the flu and then getting the vaccination, I'll be able to fight off the wild boar version of this flu. 8)
I am also an RN. I worked in ER many years and never received any flu vaccines. The last two year I have taken the flu vaccine with no reaction. I am not getting the H1N1 vaccine. This is personal choice. I do remember my sister in law receiving the vaccine then called Swine flu and ending up in ICU. I am not afraid of that happening. Our hospital has not received any vaccines yet. We are really promoting hand sanitizers, staying home if you are ill, and face masks. So far we are all doing pretty well. I think it is a hard decision for all of us and really a personal choice between you and your doc.

this really works; Adam and I both work from home and the minute I got H1N1 we were very careful about contamination. Adam never got my flu; thanks to hand washing, my not touching anything in the kitchen, me keeping tissues to cough into, etc. And I stayed home for the first 2 weeks (with the exception of doctors visits). Be courteous; if you are sick STAY HOME.
I was seriously considering getting the H1N1 vaccine until I happened to read Vaccine A by Gary Matsumoto. This well-researched and cited book delved into the Gulf War Syndrome and why only US and UK troops given the anthrax vaccine succumbed to a whole laundry list of autoimmune diseases (everything from lupus and RA to vasculitis and Guillain-Barre), ultimately implicating an adjuvant (“booster”) included in the vaccine.

Since I’m not altogether convinced this same adjuvant – squalene – isn’t in the H1N1 vaccine (it doesn’t need to be listed on the package insert), I’m not taking any chances. No vaccine for me.
nope not getting it since i actually GOT the swine flu...lol....i did get the regular one though...''supposedly'', i am immune now....

I have found people in general are not consistant in basic hygiene and rarely think of the person that follows them or has to share a space. No matter how much Purell is used, some germ will sneak through.

After reading the survey last week that stated 40% of men don't even wash after using the urinal, 8O I'd rather take my chances with the vaccine.
According to the news this morning, something crazy like 17 people have died of this JUST IN MY COUNTY (not including surrounding ones) which has to be pretty high and doesn't include the number of people who have had it, and I'm not even a tiny bit concerned about it.
I also work in health care in oncology. My experience has been that the healthier a person is ...the sicker they get. As oncology patients have almost no immune system so far any patients that have contracted H1N1 appear to have mild symptoms. However despite using all precautions several staff have been ill.
This unusual virus seems to like healthy kids and young adults .
I'm also debating whether to take the shot as I never take any vaccinations .
I feel enormous pressure to do so although it's not a condition of my employment .
