Briefly, ferret brought in: lethargic, coughing, sneezing. Family had had the flu, test revealed ferret now had it. Soooo, looks like our babies are also prone to this?? I know further down it says they aren't, but why did a ferret get it........is that closely related to pigs? |
|
Wow, not good. I wonder what other species it can mutate to |
The article does say ferrets are suseptible to that class of influenza anyway. |
Yeah, I noticed that.....they can get the type A flus.....flues.......what is the plural?? floozies?
Let's hope H1N1 doesn't cross that boundary into other animals! |
The real question is not whether or not they can get sick, poor things.
The real question is can they then retransmit the virus to their own species, or back to humans (or pigs) again. |
I don't know about all of you, but around here
if you have been sick in the last few months, you probably had h1n1. Our schools are working to get vaccine for all our school age kids, for free. Statistically, in comparison to other viruses I don't think its nearly as bad as the media has lead us to believe. IMO your immune system is like a callus, if you never use it, you won't have one! (and we all had h1n1 here, and we didn't really suffer much) Shellie |
I am still recovering from a nasty upper respiratory virus of some sort that was tested and found not to be flu at all. First a dry cough then fever then very congested lungs and then the beginnings of a recovery.
At its worst, breathing in my lungs sounded as if someone was snoring in the next room while breathing out sounded like someone crinkling cellophane. My brother also contracted this bug and we both are still coughing. We saw each other on October 3rd at a baseball game. I've been mostly in bed since. I like my iPhone, but I now need new iBalls. That didn't come out right.... It was a pun of eyeballs. Oh well. |

Oh, that made me laugh!!!! I was thinking - wow, that must have been some strong coughing....... |

We shouldn't laugh at the poor sick man. Hoping you'll be feeling better soon. The health department advised a local school to close down yesterday due to a "significant increase in student absences with flu-like illness. |
Our Therapy Dog chapter was denied access into the hospital units last night for our regular monthly visit d/t the high number of H1N1 cases. Regular visitors were being screened as well.
So, we spent an hour in the main rotunda area greeting family and staff as they passed through - and they were happy to see us. |

I thought it might be some sort of mutant virus that really knocked the stuffing out of you - Literally Seriously, though, two of my youngest sons' co-workers are quarantined at a local hospital because of H1N1, so of course he's been exposed. Nobody in our house has been vaccinated - No vaccines available yet. Oh joy |
There was an article in our paper this morning about
getting the vaccine county wide now. Our numbers of cases is incredibly high. We are now getting the vaccine county wide - for everyone, not just the students - for FREE!! Shellie |
My kids were offered the vaccine but I won't give permission for it.
I never let them get any other flu shots, so I don't plan to with this one either. I do think we need to use our immune systems and don't feel the risks of flu vaccines outweigh the risks. I'm not one of those people who doesn't think kids need ANY vaccines, my kids got all the required ones when they were little and will get boosters when necessary, I just don't think the flu ones, or the gardasil one for HPV, or the chicken pox ones, are necessarily a good idea for everyone. |
Doesn't a lot depends on other issues? My daughter has always had a compromised immune system, she gets things you shouldn't get if you are healthy (like car scratch fever and toxoplasmosis) I would recommend that she get a shot if she could (she is just over the cut off for age). |

I hope that was a typo for cat scratch fever........ |

Yes I think all things need to be taken into consideration, age, whether the immune system is already compromised or not, exposure, risks, side effects etc...
A compromised immune system however might be at greater risk for side effects too though... |
