Welcome to the forum
Some pups chew more than others, maybe you need to find something more appealing for the pup to chew? Frozen socks or ropes, frozen nylabones or kongs stuffed with a treat, ice cubes.... Also if this is happening when no one is looking, perhaps you should consider crate training? A crate can be a sanity saver, and it is safer for the pup to be in one if no one is watching him. As to the dirt and grass, most dogs do this occasionally, but if it a regular thing I would check with the vet. He may be lacking nutrients, what food is he on? Also, it can be a sign of anemia. (they eat the dirt to get iron) |
Hi and welcome!
Your pup will eventually outgrow his chewing phase, remember it's how they explore the world, and for a dog, his mouth are his hands. Make sure you remove all the non-chewable items from sight, they love to chew on paper and anything that will make them sick later on, it attracts them like a magnet. Find out what are your pup's favorite textures and start buying toys like that. I would reccomend stocking on a chew deterent product like bitter apple and spray the things you don't want him to chew on, they get the idea pretty quick. Enjoy your pup! |
Welcome to the forum Of my 4 only Rosco was a chewer....cell phones, glasses, tables.....it got so bad with the remotes I had other people go to Comcast to buy them for me. It's not as if we left them out-he could find them even when they were hidden. Glad to say Ros is now 7 and has calmed down to only stealing cough drops, etc. Tahe heart, this to shall pass. |
I keep meaning to ask-- does bitter apple stain wood? I've also seen bitter orange. ANy difference or just another flavor? I just bought new coffee tables over the weekend and I really don't want them chewed up. I had been waiting awhile to buy new furniture and then we got Clyde so I've waited even longer. I'm glad that I waited because he's definitely been a chewy little guy. I think we've put a stop to the chewing on the furniture because we haven't seen him chew in awhile but I'd rather be safe than sorry! |
*slight thread jack*
Oh my god Butterstotch I ADORE your avatar!! Clyde is a gorgeous boy, I want to give him a big hug and a kiss. *end thread jack* My baby is quite the mouthy boy too. His favorite thing to chew on is humans and kitty cats. I'm sure he's going to outgrow it but right now it's a game for him too, he'll bite something just to hear me say "no!" and then run off as a game and then come back and do it again. He's a silly one. |
RollrXGirl: From the back, I think our boys could be twins! When I first saw your avatar, I did a double take because I have an almost identical pic of Clyde doing the same thing. It sounds like they like to entertain themselves the same way too. When we go down the stairs, he tries to bite my pantleg all the way down so I'll follow him all the way to the bottom and into the living room. Every time I say no, he'll yank me down another step. At 6 months, he's almost half my weight now so he's been pushing me around a lot! |
