Why ohh why does my sheepie pace this much? Ok, yes this time she has a bone. But in general Chiquita NEVER sits down. She is CONSTANTLY walking around the house. Patrolling, looking out the windows, pacing endlessly. She has toys but she just seems very bored. If I let her outside she BARKS and BARKS and BARKS. Is this a sheepie thing or do I have a bit of an obsessed dog? |

HOW cute is that?????? click...click....click....little toe-toes on the hardwood... |
She sounds like she needs her nails cut (I know, totally not the info you asked for but it's the first thing I noticed since it's very quiet in my office today.) My vet says when you can hear them clicking on a hard floor, it's time. Which reminds me, I have to call and get all my guys done...
Anyway, she looks bored and stressed at the same time. Are there squirrels outside or something else that she knows is out there so she's anxious about it? I can't really relate. This is what it looks like most of time at our house. |
no pacers here at our house either - sorry |
what on earth???????? Why is your sheepie just sleeping????????????? AHhhhhhhhhhhh! That about kills me.
(yes she does need her nails clipped) Yes, there are squirrels outside that she is constantly concerned about. Why do you think she is so anxious? I've recently been trying to make her sit on a mat and stay. She's terrible at it. But the pacing is so annoying after a bit. This was immediately after her second long walk of the day. She had just pooped and peed and was simply PACING |
Ditto on the sleeping sheepie. She is so lazy that you have to step over her. Gertie only exerts energy at the dog parks. |
sorry - mine are pretty laid back when they are at rest. But I do a lot with them and train everyday in something - personally I think they are very happy to see me leave for work in the morning Although I did walk in onMarley having a game of fetch by herself this morning |
Mine aren't slugs or lazy , but they sure know how to relax at home.......
here are 5 of them - Chewie is the blob the furthest away, out on the porch - |
Have you ever considered fostering dog or babysitting one for the day to see if it might redirect this energy? Now I'm not advocating getting another dog specifically FOR a dog because then you could end up with two dogs pacing or a mismatch with another set of behaviors. But sometimes another dog will give a dog something else to focus on.
The controlled energy of a leash walk is way different than the dog-to-dog roughhousing in the backyard that can expend nervous energy. |
You know - if one of mine did that with a bone i would assume they wanted to go out and bury it. |
Yeah, I was thinking, "That looks like I want to bury this but can't get thru the door."
If she paces other times, then she needs mental stimulation........outside, runs, agility, therapy dog, carting, sheep herding, dock dog.........she wants a job! There's a mind inside that skull that is itching to work. There is nothing in my dogs' brains except the thought of naps and food. |
Asterisk doesn't pace, but she does march in place with her front feet and bark/whines a lot. Like you, I can take her for walks or take her to the dog park and try my best to work off that energy, but she's only 17 months and she recovers quickly.
Wendel has helped a bit in this behavior, when she marches and bark/whines, I'll ask if she wants to go outside and Wendel and Asterisk tear off towards the door and wrestle in the back yard. It doesn't always help. I'm hoping it's just an age thing and as she ages, she'll settle down a bit more. Maybe your baby just has that endless puppy energy that recharges faster than anything I know of. |
I know you said she does that at other times but that is my dalmo with a bone to a tee.
Out back is all paved and there are only two tiny little squares (4inches by 4 inches) of soil where he can put a bone. He knows that, we know that. He still spends 10-15 mins pacing the same route around the courtyard, down the side walkway, in his kennel and then back. Over and over and over. I guess he's hoping a nice patch of soil will miraculously appear. Eventually he gives up and puts it in one of the two possible locations. Then he gives a big sigh and comes inside. |
Do you have a fence around your back yard? Maybe if she could go out which it looks like she wants to do--she would come back in and settle down a bit- |
To me she looks like she wants to go out in the yard. Usually if Jenny paces (which isn't often), it's because she wants something -- to go outside, or wants water something like that. |
Maggie does that when she has a really good treat and is not sure where to settle down and enjoy it. I think it is funny. Looks like Chiquita wants to enjoy hers outside. |
Winnie paces around with a bone or treat until she can find her "preferred" place to lay down and chew it (which is usually on white carpet
But if Chiquita is pacing like that ALL the time, I'd say she was bored and looking for something to do. Doggy day care has helped Winnie so much - she has lots of physical play with other dogs, and mental stimulation from being around the staff (most of whom also are trainers). If you have one nearby check it out. We do half-day doggy day care a couple times a week and what a world of difference. But it could be something else. Have you talked to the vet to have her checked out for anything physical? |
We put Apolo on the treadmill. Now if the door to that room is open he goes in and stands on the thing waiting for it to start up! Best thing we ever did! |
Sorry to say this and maybe it's just me...but to me it's obvious why she is pacing. If you really look at her, she is walking back and forth with a bone in her mouth to the door, looking outside and then looking at you.
She can't settle down with the bone because she doesn't want to eat it (or chew on it) right now but she wants to save it for later and she needs to hide it somewhere safe. And if she can't find the PERFECT place for the bone to hide it inside the house...well, she needs to take it outside and bury it! That poor thing was telling you to let her out so she can hide her bone! We had the same situation with my lab mix, Lumpi when we lived in Chicago on the 29th floor...he didn't settle down until I put some blankets down in a corner of our bedroom where he could "bury" that bone. He walked up and down just like you sheepie looking for the perfect spot. |
yup, she def wanted to hide the bone. I knew she did but it was raining and the yard was a lake.
BTW, I took her to get her nails trimmed today and the vet said she only had three that were long!!! Can you believe all that clicking from only three nails? Like I said, the bone was obvious but she does the same thing with or without bones and after playing with her doggy friend, three long runs a day and playing and training sessions. She is the paciest puppy I have ever met! |
