Also, what other grooming products would you recommend I should have on hand for my new baby. Thank you, all advise is appreciated. |

Don't even try to dematt him. Just have him shaved. The dematting process is painfull and you do not want him to associate you with pain. Just take him in to be groomed and shaved. Buy a sweatshirt for him to keep him warm. You both will be happier. I had a similar expereince and tried to keep his hair too. It's not worth it and you can't bathe him until the matts are gone and he may stink.
Got to run |
If he is really matted, you may want to take him to your vet if they have a groomer there. They can sedate him so he won't feel anything.
It will cost a little more, but you have to think of his comfort also. |
hi there
I just picked up a resue dog last week and she too was severly matted. I took her to be shaved yesterday and the mats were terrible - so terrible that there was mold growing under the mats against her skin. If the mats are really bad please have her shaved to avoid skin infection and numberous other problems mats can cause not to mention the discomfort for the animal. I would try to avoid demattting if there are alot of them as it may be stressful and painful - If you are unsure you can always make an appointment with your vet to have the situtation evaluated. |
Just shave. It'll grow back faster than you know! |
Congratulations on you're new pup!
I agree with the rest to shave. It will not only be easier and less stressful, but it will give you a chance to see if there are other issues that need to be looked into. Under those matts could be staph infections, ticks (depending on weather and locations) and other critters. A complete shave and then vet visit can't harm anything. It can also reveal other scars from previous surgeries or injuries/trauma that may later have repercussions. I would think that most dogs that come into rescue would need to be shaved. The dense coat of the OES can hide many abnormalities. But this is just my opinion. |
Congrats and welcome to the forum!
I agree also, shaving is best. You want your first days and weeks to be happy experiences so you can bond, and spending that time dematting means the dog is not going to associate you with happy things and may cause problems later on. Good Luck! Does she have a name? |
Welcome to the forum!!
I will concur. Dematting is something your doggie should not go trough while adjusting to your home. Been there.... It's better to shave and start over, that way you'll se a wonderful transformation when you get a fresh start, their coat grows to a gorgeous length and they look great! |
Shaving is the only answer for severe matting. My Son & Daughter in law rescued a badly matted OES and shaved her themselves. It took them several evenings to get it done using an Oster. Only temporary drawback is she looked naked. but was much happier. Yes it does grow back in a hurry and you can then stay on top of the grooming and if you wish have a beautiful long coat on your OES. |
I appreciate the advice I have received and will just have Kobe shaved. I want to make his adjustment as peaceful and enjoyable as possible. I am just so excited to be bringing him home.
I will post pictures as soon as I can, I will have the camera ready when he and my kids meet. The kids think the other family who passed the application got him. I wanted to spare them the anxiety of it all, just in case. We, my parents and our household, have lost animals every Christmas the last 4 years, so my husband and I have been trying to do everything we can to find a beautiful furever puppy that is healthy and needed a furever family. Thank you all so much. |
Depending on where the mats are, how many and how bad, your groomer may be able to leave more length than you think. We just had Lizzie shaved last week and our groomer left her a good inch. Of course, she doesn't stay out at night either!! Also, if the fur and skin are in bad condition, it won't be working very well as insulation anyway. |
Finally! Someone used the picture from Labyrinth.
Good luck with your rescue! |
There was a sheepdog in Labrynth? Hmmm... I'll have to take another look at that... |
There were 3 sheepdogs in Labyrinth. Two real ones and an animatronic one. One real one at the beginning, very messy. Then the animatronic and other real one take turns being ridden by the fox. |
