Well, Abbott didn't have severe reactions to the chemo. He did go off his food for a few days after each treatment, so I just let him have dilute chichen broth......not too much at a time. Then gradually I reintroduced ruce and chicken balls. (Mix ground turkey with rice, form into balls and poach in the broth.) Stick with low salt or better, homemade w/o salt.
The doggies aren't going to starve by being off food for a few days. If they are too sick to eat, forcing them to eat won't help. When the noneating went on for awhile, the dog died.......but from some other cause. The noneating, or starvation, wasn't the cause. Avoiding liquids as well as food is more serious. This needs to be discussed with the vet. When it happens here, I freeze the dilute broth into cubes and let them lick them.......sometimes that works. Usually I offer limited water several times a day, eventually they start drinking again. Pedilyte, the rehydration liquid for children also helps. In severe cases the doggie may need to go on IVs for awhile to rehydrate. |
My sister has her dog of collostrum (collustrum?) for the diarrhea. It is a more natural medication than immodium and can be given all the time. She also has a puppy with a recent amputation. |
I know this will sound strange but when my Zoe was undergoing chemo for lymphoma she was also going to a holistic vet who prescribed some chinese herbs for her. The cancer vet recommended it and said that she had seen a number of dogs do much better when using the vitamins and herbs. I don't know if they did anything as far as the chemo is concerned but she never had any adverse reactions to any of the drugs she took. I don't even take vitamins myself so I'm not pushing anything just that it seemed to make it easier on her. |
Hi,
Shaggy, my former OES also had chemo. I went to the public library and read everything I could on how to boost her immune system. With a combination of chicken broth, chicken and lots of beta carotene veggies I was able to bring her blood count platlette (think that's what is was) from 10 up to 200. A dogs normal blood count is 185. The vet said whatever you are doing it's a miracle and keep it up. Shaggy had a disease that was somewhat like leukemia. I also put her on a dose of three vitamins that were known to be immune boosters. The beta carotene veggies were carrots, sweet potatoes and some dark green leafy veggies which I mixed in her food. She lived for another 6 years and I continued with this diet for the rest of her life. Only one word of caution, please check with a naturalpathic vet or doctor for advice as for example shark cartlidge is touted as a really great immune booster, yet it also thins the blood. You just have to be aware of the dosage and the combination of natural medicines too. I wish your friend the best of luck and will keep her in my thoughts. Marianne and the boys |
