Barking

We just adopted the most beautiful Sheepdog, Bella. We love everything about her. We have had her about a week and she has started barking when my husband comes into the room. She also does this at 4:30 AM when he leaves for work, which wakes up our five year old daughter. She does it for a minute or so , and we tell her to stop. It is just continual barking. My hubby will pet her and love on her, and she just keeps it up. Are we doing something wrong? We never punish her, just tell her to stop-it's like she's in a trance or something, like she doesn't even hear us. HELP!

Ah, you've got her spoiled already! This is tough but try ignoring her instead of paying attention to her.

When your husband leaves in the morning he shouldn't say goodbye to Bella or acknowledge her in any way. Same when he comes home. Just calmly walk in and go about doing things without saying hello to her or making any fuss. After about five minutes he can give a treat, hug and love on her as much as he wants.

Bella has learned that your husband's entering and leaving the house is a bad thing. The attention ends when he walks out the door and begins the second he comes back. This can take a few days but eventually she'll understand and should stop barking.

Remember, an adopted dog can take several weeks or more to fully settle in. Have patience. :-) Consider becoming a member here because most of us have been through these things ourselves and have lots to share.
Yep, my sheepie girl does the exact same thing! My husband comes home from work and she gets all excited-just sits there and barks and barks at him-which annoys him to no end as we cannot figure out what to do to stop it. He has tried ignoring her when he arrives but she tries her hardest to get his attention, pawing at him, barking, etc.

She just turned a year this month and still has lots of puppy in her! :D
